Title: What is OM?
Post by: White Eagle on May 21, 2009 11:04 am
Does anyone have a problem that through listening to the Om sound and by quieting the thoughts you start to hear a chaos of sounds.
This can be very annoying. Or is it through practise your ear becomes sharper, now if you live in the country side that is wonderful, but not when you live in the city. Even in my small country when you go somewhere in nature, mostly you hear the buzzing of the cars from the highways.
I really start to long for a place where there is the silence of natural sounds, but it seems to be impossible.
Most people hate silence, and they are always busy and it does not bother them, but when you start to look for silence you did not realize there is so much noice. There is in reality no silence, only there is silence when our ear cannot catch that sound.

For the moment I stopped to listen to the Om technique as it is really bothering me. :( and I start to have a monkeyconsciousness, I start to concentrate to much on the noice than on the Om sound
Any advise?

Hi White Eagle,

For advice regarding practicing the Om Technique, I suggest contacting SRF (Self Realization Fellowship) Mother Center either by phone or snail mail.  If your going to Convocation in August, there are monastics there available for counseling.  I think the monastics at SRF are the experts and the best for counseling and giving advice on the SRF techniques.

Regarding what you say about finding silence in today's world, it is challenging.  When I'm driving many times I drive with no music and quickly put the window up when I hear other people's music.  In my house I usually have no music on nor tv.  I really like silence.
I hope this helps.

Nomaste White Eagle it is nice to hear from you again.

Usually when people practice the Om technique they eventually start hearing the sound of Om. i would describe it as if you were listening in a sea shell. You start hearing the sound of the sea and at varying times it gets louder or softer. It is a comforting sound though: Not concophany. i assume you are chanting om. Correct?

i wonder what kind of service you are involved in. Woiuld it exclude you from moving to the country? i think that the constant noise of the suburban and city life is a reminder that we are multiplying to fast as a species. At sometime we ourselves have had too many children to create this mess. But we can set a new course by not multiplying like rabbits. How many children do you have?

Thank You for your observations.

Steve

Yes I am chanting OM; for many years I loved to do this technique. Is it possible that you start to be conscious of sounds you never watch before? When you start to watch something you really have difficulties not to concetrate on it. As this is a world of opposites, maybe next to the nice sounds there are the less agreeable sounds you catch, as when you listen to music, there are parts in the music who make you uplifting and other parts which make you even nervous.

I have no kids in the house. But I feel that there is no space, everywhere there are people, everywhere there is noice. Travelling to other countries which are bigger is financially not possible for me and anyway after one month you have to come back to the same environment and the same problem arises.

Maybe this technique is alright in a more quiet environment?

" I think the monastics at SRF are the experts and the best for counseling and giving advice on the SRF techniques." Thanks Joy but I am not an SRF member.

hi White Eagle,

I cannot help in regards to the specific questions about the OM technique, but I am wondering if perhaps you are noticing the noises because you are trying so hard to focus on the silence ?

Let me give you an example ~ when I first started meditating, I was told that one has to empty the mind of all thoughts, not so easy to do. There were always thoughts coming and going, and the harder I tried to focus on not having thoughts, it seemed that more thoughts would enter the mind.

Then I decided to relax, not to worry about the thoughts, not to focus on the thoughts but to let them drift into the mind, then let the thoughts leave the mind - I just decided not to think about the thoughts. And soon, it was easier to sit in the silence. I also found out there are many ways to meditate, I just had to find the way that works for me.

Maybe this idea might be of help to you, but like I said, I really can't comment on the OM technique - but just use the idea of not focusing so much on the noise, perhaps just chant your OMs and listen to the sound of the OM and if there are other noises - just let the noises exist - but do not listen to the noises and maybe they will eventually be less noticeable to you. I hope this is of some help to you, if not - just toss my suggestion out the window, lol !  ;D

blessings,
Into Blue

i have found to quite the chaos of my mind ..i start with counting backwards slowly with each intake of breath or exhale of breath ..

if that does not work then i go to my PLACE...my comforting place in my mind that is jsut mine that i created there...

then i can focus on the meditation I am trying to do .

and you smply might just try wearing a headband across eyes.. I make one that the folds  will allow me to add the crystal or gemstone of my choice into the fold so it is laying against my third eye.

and also wear a pair of earmuffs or put in a pair of earplugs.  simple cotton  balls may work also.

that will turn off the outside influences of light and sound.

then the OM vibration is totally within and easier to concentrate on  its vibratory  sound and feel

just my thoughts on this

it depends on what i am trying to do or what stone is calling  me...

if working on me ..maybe hematite to keep me grounded
if trying to  go to the upper regions...probably amethyst or clear quartz

if healing maybe rose quartz or  green aventurine
maybe i pick by a chakra color or
sometimes i just look at the  bunch i have and if one seems like i am drawn to it for any reason i use that one.
it is mostly just what is resonating with me at the moment

hope that helps  monsier...estenbando

Hello everybody. Hey Steve, guess what? I'm not bying it. You couldn't possibly be having any trouble with the Om technique. It's a nice try to pretend that you might be. I figure that type of innocent gesture can only help others on the path. So if anyone wants to call me the grinch, go right ahead, because guess what kids? Santa Clause isn't real.

Sorry Goldwolf i do not understand your comment. Where did i say that i was having problems with the om technique? Please quote and read from the first thread. As you may or may not be able to see we have been waiting till such time as White Eagle wants to reply....in the mean time we have engaged in other topics. Sometimes conversations drift into other areas. Impressions can be decieving; therefore it is often necessary to avoid premature conclusions. It can cause a lot of unnecessary energy depletion. In this case i would say it is a simple misunderstanding. Anyone practicing the om technique that Paramahansa Yogananda gave to us would know that the current conversation has nothing to do with the om technique as we were talking about the third eye and recognizing it in meditation.   Hello my friends. Steve, if I didn't test your patience you'd think I didn't like you. This is my public apology, I'm sorry. Please forgive my ignorance. It's a good thing that you frequent this board, those of us on this path have someone to look up to.

Goldwolf: Humility is the mark of greatness it appears that you have your share. i still have a lot to learn in the practice of meditation and feel that Yogananda has given us all we need but at the same time others have a different angle that can often help us see our own practices more clearly. This being the case; i have been grateful for other saints friends and Masters who i have met along the way.

Hey Steve. You are the elder on this path from my perspective, surely you are greater than me. I'm just a regular guy blessed with yoga techniques that show me reality beyond the reality of the five senses. There is still a lot I don't understand. I feel reborn in a sense because of Om. Lately it's been as if the technique of concentration opens the door to the other side even though I am still quite conscious of my body. My body seems to be more like this body, something I'm responsible for during meditation, something secondary to the reality of divine love of God and for God during meditation. After the tecnique of concentration opens the door to the other side in Om I enter the time before time began, the void. (this is how it's been lately) In the void I can see this body and mind more clearly. There is no where for my faults to hide in the void. The sound of Om is guiding me, it sounds as if the world is ending so in meditation there is no worry only love. It has of lately been taking me to before the beginning and in a sense bringing some sort of rememberence of the beginning. The realization of the devinity of the human race.

I'm starting to see it as rediculous the way people sometimes see animals as our equals but petty human inconsistancies cause people to see other human beings as monsters.

That last sentence may qualify as rambling. This section is titled problems through the Om technique and here I am bragging about my success. My mental attitude isn't all peachy and roses though. When I meditate I'm ready to die, I surrender completely. I know what evil is because not long ago my mind was infected with evil. I've paid a price of being destroyed even tortured by evil for the promise of a little of God's light to shine on me and if I died today I'd do it all again in my next life for the love of God. If I have to eat from the tree of good and evil to find the truth about God and what love means then if it works and gets me closer to God I accept my fate. I've learned to love all of my brothers and sisters on this planet Earth. Sorry if I rambled a little. May our Lord God bless us all.

Hi White Eagle,

there are plenty of things I want to answer you, but that would become rather long a post. So I decided to present it in bits.

Do you speak of music in general or are you referring to a certain kind of music.

With me, I have the same experience with modern music that stress the beat. I have no problems with devotional and classical music.

I think a strong beat easily interferes with your own rhythm, which is your heartbeat.

Hello Kashiraja

Sri, but it is a long time I posted something on a forum. I even didn't know so many people answered my post. It was rather a difficult and strange year for me and I really kept to myself.

I like to listen to new age music. Sounds which let me fly.

The point is that I am more conscious about sounds in the environment which I never watch before. To practise the Aum, to listen to sounds in the right ear, learns you also to be more aware of sounds. Sounds who were always there but now you are conscious about them. In the lessons they stress the fact of looking for quiet places, this is not always possible and I became to concentrated on the fact that my environment had to be quiet, this was my mistake. This longing makes someone dependant and in this maya world this is asking for trouble.  A longing creates opposites. I feel that the silence within  is more important, when the sensations stop and there are no thoughts anymore.

Om Namaste
