Title: Meditation times places and conditions
Post by: Jitendra Hy-do-u-no-us? on Sep 29, 2014 07:15 pm
Over the years I have noticed places, times and conditions conducive to meditation for me.

1. Natural places the ocean, bodies of water, the mountains, sand dunes, streams, rivers and forests are very helpful for calming us and enhance the meditation process.

2. Meditating at spiritual places is very helpful... where masters or saints are buried, where Masters or saints meditated or inhabited especially in their presence.

3. Meditating with others especially spiritually elevated humans.

4. Keeping company with other spiritual aspirants that meditate.

5. Meditating at the golden hour; twilight before the Sun rises or before it sets.

I have much to add to this thread. Hope some of you participate. Next I intend to include conditions favorable and unfavorable for meditation.

I Always enjoyed meditating in the Woods or in the mountains, I agree that's conducive to a good meditation, providing there are not many bugs around. I remember I was meditating in a wood, cross-legged against a tree trunk, I was not meditating deeply so some commotion made me open my eyes and I saw a wild boar running right against me. I stood up alarmed and it deviated its course, probably saw me just then.
I think those who meditated in the Woods have some funny story to tell. Another time I remember it was so relaxing in this mountain meadow that I just fell asleep. I also meditated in caves, in the deepest darkness and that's pretty nice as well. Meditating on the snow with freezing temperatures is also great.

Many times i have meditated and had Christians interrupt me to 'Save me'. I have listened to everything they have to say over and over again and genuinely believe they are part of the problems we are now encountering in the middle east. These people are just as fanatical as some of the Moslems. They will not respect your spiritual beliefs and feel it their mission to make you into their image.

Mccoy just listening to your experiences inspires me to sit and interiorize going for that inner peace which brings consciousness of purpose and crystal clear expansive perceptions in regards to circumstances and events happening around us. All becomes clearer and the purpose of events around us become clearer.

An example is that recently i have been stopped by cops for log book violations. They were more or less warnings. Later the company I work for had a full investigation. Though my records were checked they found nothing incriminating. Though the company had many violations. As it has been said; God works in mysterious ways. A bit of a precognitive warning of sorts.

Here on Razzledorf , which is on the edge of the Tape Worm Galaxy  just east of paradise, we meditate in enclosed incubators with climatic controlled atmospheres offering radiant electrodes of different frequencies which infiltrate our kinetic sphere. Once a hybrid electro smuglaflyer got into my meditation cubicle and dislocated my three bottom chakras. It gave me ublonic
shivers with heat flashes lasting several days.

i'm a novice when it comes to meditation and have only on rare occasion been able to still my thoughts.
but i find a lot of spiritual activity for me happens at night and in the dark, when the activity from the majority of people in my town have slowed down.
spirit will inspire me. usually i lay there unable to sleep and left to face my thoughts which can be a scary thing if you don't do it often. the past few nights was good as i was able to visualize deeper desires and articulate/construct the appropriate path to retaining awareness. i don't know if you'd consider this meditation though because that chatter for me doesn't seem to turn off- just slow down. i'm in no rush to achieve the deeper aspects of meditation though

We always appreciate your insights Eric. i doubt that the chatter completely turns off for anyone here and if it does it is not for long....The point is to slow down these thoughts and the biological apparatus and let spirit in.....to provide a gateway to the otherside. As you know we here at the portal except that everyone has their own slant on spirituality. This is mine and we enjoy and learn hearing yours as well. One thing that comes to awareness; sometimes we meditate and other times we contemplate. There is a difference. Both are important.

Meditation is our great passion and it is a wonderful one to have because it is the gateway to finding a way out of this material dimension into true reality. There are certain times that are more suited to meditation when earth vibrations are suited to calming the body and mind. I find the best times are at dusk and dawn. These are the golden hours. The mind settles down as it is receptive to the energy of the Sun retreating over the horizon. If it is possible you can look directly into the Sun about 15 minutes before it sets and you can still visualize it after it sets in the afterglow. If not though; the lite dims if you are at an outdoors place or near windows. This has a calming affect on the consciousness. The restless activity of the day settles down and it is easier to interiorize. The breath and thoughts seem to settle down with nature's activities doing the same.

Watch the breath. If you have woolen blanket put it under yourself. It helps insulate you from the earth currents. Calm yourself and witness the peace around you. Bring your attention to the spine which is the alter of God. Practice a mantra with the in flow of the breath and the exhalation. Be an observer to the longer spaces between the breath. Everything is calming down now. Your heart your breath and your thoughts. Let yourself enjoy the feeling of just being...  just being

Sometimes when we are unable to sleep it is almost like spirit is asking us to communicate with it.... so we get up and meditate and communicate with spirit.  This often happens early in the morning which is one of the best times to meditate...right before dawn. There are very few cars, people are asleep, and our thoughts are more subdued because of evening slumber sleep often leaves us refreshed and calmer than usual. We can get up andl light up our relationship with spirit and enter that relationship with God that we are seeking.

I used to get up very early in the morning when I lived in a monastery and meditate with another monk. There is definately a sense of peace about it. Sometimes though we would 'nod out'. That is fall asleep in sitting position and the head falls forward a bit. It is a very bad habit to get in. We used to help each other stay awake by making noises or throwing a pillow at one another since there were pillows and comfortable chairs at the back of the chapel. There are many good reasons to meditate with other people this being one of them. We usually started meditating between 2 and 4 A.M. depending on when we woke up and would continue till 'arati' took place at 6:30 A.M. It was a Vivekananda monastery. I stayed there for quite a few years.

After all those years of practice and training it is much easier and a habit to wake up early in the morning and start my practice.
Meditation early in the morning helps give protection and guidance for the rest of the day. It is hard for me to think of waking up now without meditating and praying. When i see others do this it reminds of the mistake they are making by letting the world completely get hold of them - and not God/Spirit- at the start of the day. It sets the day off for only material perceptions instead of spiritual insights.

However in the wee hours of morning there is a silence that surrounds everything. You may just hear factories trains or car motors way in the distance. If you are really fortunate there will only be sounds of nature- the wind and trees. Birds or a deafening silence from which the sound of om oozes out. In this stillness you may look in a pool of insights as they surface in your consciousness... helping you solve and understand the events, people and situations around you.

I take it it kind of depends on people and subjective conditions.

In the past I tried to force upon myself, by sheer willpower, very early meditation, and that failed miserably.

That is, I sure was able to wake up and sit down in a proper cross legged posture, but then I had dreams, while remaining sit, nodding out the way Steve describes. Many times I went like that for hours, at the end I realized time ran away too fast, not because I achieved the state of Samhadi, but because of the state of slumber.

I may try that out again but very cautiously,

Stillness:

It appears to me that the number one ingredient in a effective meditation is stillness. If you can find a place where it is absolutely quiet you are much better off. i can't tell you how many times i was at SRF meditations and the person in charge or the monastic there would emphasize not moving around and making noise. God/Spirit likes stillness and will creep into your consciousness if you can maintain that stillness...in environment body and mind.

When the body and mind become still it is much easier to calm the mind. Any exterior sound can take you out of that inner tranquility that brings moments of bliss.

Whenever it is sprinkling or raining and i am not working it is an open invitation to meditate. It is so peaceful, interiorizing and relaxes the mind while awakening the spirit.

+1 on that, rain is definitely relaxing.

Today i was meditating in the woods and it started to sprinkle. Such an experience to have lite droplets fall on your face and to hear the sound of little droplets fall on the leaves in the forest!

Yes mostly the chatter does not turn off but just slows down as u say but as we withdraw our attention into the spine and the breath and as all our senses shut down, there is less attention given to the ends of perception and the sensory outlets which can continue to vie for out attention. There is more and more attention given to the inner realms and we are withdrawn more and more into the spirit and the mind. We are allowed to be aware more more of the inner world instead of the outer one. This is especially possible when the outer world is very still which is something that happens in the dead of nite.

i have found one challenge with waking in the middle of the nite though. That is the body still may not be sufficiently rested and so you may fall asleep during the meditation or the body starts stiffening and u may have to change positions or actually meditate again after some rest. But there often still remains a period rite upon awakening that is good for meditation.

It's summer now Eric and imagine it gets quite warm in Texas where u live. Occasionally we have cool nites in the summer here in Michigan. There is nothing like meditation with a summer breeze.

Hi Steve. We have high humidity here. I remember thinking the altitude in Colorado was something but when I told our Uber driver we were from Texas he said he's been there and couldn't handle the humidity. On occasion I like to sweat and when the sun rises or sets I like to gaze in a semi meditative state. I look to the Sun for vitality.

I have found that there is nothing quite like waking up to meditation. Because the mind is not so active and has just come out of the subconscious from sleep, rest and relaxation. Therefore the consciousness is more receptive to the peace, often long sought for, that comes from meditation practice. It can be more difficult to settle the mind during the day; once it has been activated to solve the challenges of daily living. If we live with others it is very helpful to meditate with them. However if they do not and we can wake up before them and meditate we will easily recognize the mixed feelings in others that comes from waking and the restlessness of indulging in food immediately upon awakening.

If we connect with the inner peace of rest from the previous nite we can carry it over into the days activities.
We may find ourselves still absorbed in that inner tranquility after meditation as well and find it a good time for reflection and perhaps spiritual reading. In this meditative state we just have come out of we can often see clearer to challenges we face and can respond to others from an understanding that may not be possible when the mind is churned up by activity.
