Title: Amma on Science
Post by: Jitendra Hy-do-u-no-us? on Dec 08, 2014 10:37 am
"If one's mind is purely scientific, it will not be compassionate. The tendency of such a mind will only be to attack, overpower and harass others. However, when a scientific intellect comes together with an understanding of spirituality--the inner essence of religion--compassion and sympathy for all living beings arise spontaneously.

World history is primarily comprised of stories fraught with hostility, revenge and hatred. The rivers of blood spilled by man in his attempt to seize everything for himself and bring everyone under his thumb have yet to run dry. In fact, when we look into the past, it may seem as though the human race has not possessed even an iota of compassion, so cruel have been our actions.
We should learn lessons from history, but we should not live there. The fusion of science and spirituality will help us come out of the dark corridors of the past and into the light of peace, harmony and unity." -Amma

I find Amma's considerations pretty correct. I would add to her first sentence though, that, as far as I understand, A purely scientific mind deos not automatically imply a tendency to attack, overpower and harrass. This is true of a purely scinetific mind which is tainted by aggressiveness, hubris and evil tendencies. I have a feeling that most purely scientifical minds would not at all be concerned by interaction with the others, be they good or ill-intentioned. A purely scientific mind would reason almost like a computer. A computer is not good nor evil and of course cannot be compassionate.
