Very peculiar, it may even resemble an artifact, we'll know in a few days if it is the leftovers of ancient alien civilizations or just plain ice & soda....salt.

i like your take on it... anthropological and geological possibilities... one of these days... it would be nice if it was in our life time..

The recent reports do not shed much more light, even though the ice hypothesis appears to be the most likely

Still a mistery, but ice seems to be a likely candidate. We'll see later on...

UFO? It looks more like a big dark whole... a crater?

The edges of the white spots appear to be very irregular, that would be against it being an artifact...They seem to be inside a crater, which might have protected the ice if it is ice...

It would be a crater within a crater? Since you can see a larger round basin that the white spots are placed in. How do we explain the dark whole or object in the ridge? It does look like the edges are irregular as though it is salt or ice fading out.

Interesting; Ceres rotates about every 9 days so if there were lites it seems like they would show up when it is dark. All the pictures seem to be in the lite. This is also of interest:

The question being this: did they just plan on Dawn being on the lite side of ceres? Because if it ever traveled on the dark side we certainly would not see lites if it was salt or ice.

As far as I understood, Ceres has a rotation period of 9 earth days, so Dawn should be able to see all its surface in such a cycle.

My point being that if Dawn is always on the lite side it is very difficult to know if they are lites. If dawn went to the dark side it would b obvious. It appears as though Dawn is mostly moving downward at this time and perhaps always has been on the lite side.

Ah, KK, that would require a very technical explanation, type of photo sensors, their receptivity to light, filters, softwares and so on. I'm pretty sure they can do just about everything with those images. Also, sunlight is probably pretty faint out there. I never saw light with that shape even though an alien civilization may like them irregular and despise everything with a regular geometric shape!

For sunlight being so faint the lite coming from Ceres is sure brite. But then again it may not have much of an atmosphere.

Hope the mistery can be solved by closer images... planetary geomorphologists are the experts in this fields, might try and find some forum with their opinions

By a quick search I didn't find any more detailed material on the Ceres' bright spots but found soem interesting website like this one. I'll have to read some material myself, Some planet like Mars are being studied like they were a hill in front of us.

i found your link much more convincing especially since we have found: "Titan’s largest distinct and highly reflective surface feature, named Xanadu, is located close to the equator." We can extrapolate very easily that this phenomena is likely other places as well.

From these pictures at those lowest altitude Dawn will drop to it looks like these are salt patches.

".....when we’d finally get our clearest view of the famous “bright spots”. Spectral observations have shown that the patches are consistent with a magnesium sulfate called hexahydrite that resembles the more familiar Epsom salts here on Earth. Scientists think these salt-rich areas were residue left behind when water-ice sublimated in the past. Impacts from asteroids could have broken into Ceres’ crust and possibly unearthed salt-rich ices. Exposed to the vacuum of space, the ice would have sublimated (vaporized), leaving the salt behind."

It looks like Nasa is concluding that these white areas are salt.

Finally read this on yahoo news. So maybe this solves the mystery.

When NASA’s Dawn spacecraft visited Ceres, the largest world in the asteroid belt, its brightest feature was a huge surprise. In the center of Occator crater, a large (but not the largest) feature on Ceres’ moon-like surface exhibits a series of bright, white spots along the crater floor. As Dawn flew closer, it was able to perform a distant chemical analysis, determining that this wasn’t ice or aliens, but rather salts that were so reflective. The dome-like structure is at a depth of 4 km (2.5 miles) below the surface, deeper than anything else known. But the big surprise, as new analysis shows, is that the salts are sodium carbonates, not magnesium sulfates, indicating that at least the surface ...

...sodium carbonate is good for indigestion, whereas magnesium sulphate would have been good for constipation.

Wonder when  are they going to mine that crater
