Title: Boring meditations
Post by: ding dong on Jun 08, 2016 08:36 am
Why do people who start meditating want to sit for extraordinarily long times? If one's mind becomes quiet for even one instant, it would extend itself naturally. Forcing oneself to sit for a long time is stupid.

If you are bored during meditation you are doing it wrong.

The Buddha had determination. He refused to move from the bodhi tree 🌳 till he was enlightened and because of this determination something extraordinary happened to him that affected people up till this day. Paramahansa Yogananda recommended long meditations at least once a week to go deeper then usual in the meditation state. The big word u use here is 'if'. While it is true that in one moment the mind will extend. It is also true that in one moment someone can find gold, a lost civilization, or create a beautiful piece of music. The question is this; in what moment this will happen? That is why people devote so much time to what they do. We must constantly observe to see 👀 what we r doing rite or wrong during meditation. Thus the length of practice to determine such things and to improve our knowing.

Many hours of practice is essential to any art form. Meditation is infinitely more subtle. Why would it be any different? If we r bored we must ask ourselves why. Are we expecting something rather then giving something? Are we practicing in such a way that boredom will not b a part of our routine? These r the type of questions we must ask ourselves.

Ding Dong, you should perhaps define 'extraordinarily long times'. Is that an hour? 3 hours? 6 hours? 12 hours? 48 hours? I found the exercise of forcing myself to sit for a long time pretty satisfactory. It is sure an exercise of will power related to a worthwhile endeavor, and such exercise can only be good (barring the slight headache which can develop).

Mccoy since Master Ding has not responded as of yet... i would like to add something here. It is not to detract from what you are saying since i believe it is helpful. i know that we may have many shorter meditations then real long ones if our attention and focus continues to be difficult this coupled with the right practice that works for us. What i have noticed is this: When we meditate quite often and also for long periods it is not always during the meditation that we notice results. Somewhat like taking some drugs it may be hours or days till we see results. Yet all of a sudden we may feel this happiness or lightness come over us or have certain insights. They may not happen during meditation at all but rather at a different time. i can see that this is what is so interesting about the meditation process, It is not like a scientific procedure in which you conduct an experiment and expect certain results that confirm the test. The results could come at any time and manifest in various ways. Yet eventually we get a grasp on the changes and the insights that emerge in our life from the practice. This makes it much more interesting and much less boring.

Right, Steve.
Anyway, 'boring' may be is not the right term. boring is watching TV shows or TV news, which apparently are the same every day.
Boring is to see soccer events or many of other big bucks sportive events. Boring is to see or hear advertisement.

We cannot put meditation, even if without immediate results, at the same plane. I would rather engage for hours in a 'tedious' meditation rather than watch a soccer match or a TV show.

i can easily relate to your experiences of what boring is and it it distinguishes us from the ant like pace of 'normal' activities. The insipid activities u mention are the interests of the masses doomed to go thru many lifetimes of material entertainment as opposed to feeling the freedom and liberation from these pastimes in meditation. At first we may have feelings of being alone in meditation and compare it with the activities of the masses and wonder about ourselves. However after a time at the practice of meditation we more and more realize the foolishness of normal activities and realize the 'prison' of material existence that most people have consigned themselves to. Having met people like yourself mccoy (and others here) we begin to compare notes and are further encouraged by the efforts of others to immerse ourselves in the spiritual practices we have followed and forego the treacherous path of material persuasion into this material existence that others accept as real.

The mind is bored in meditation because of its ceaseless need for excitement, distractions and entertainment from the environment as well as its restless desires. The mind has been conditioned for life times to listen to such distractions so when it takes time to experience peace and tranquility it instead experiences boredom and the doldrums. This activity must be quieted. Without the use of powerful techniques of meditation designed to quell desires of the restless mind and some effort to curb amusements... meditation can appear boring and have no appeal. Even people who r by nature, more quiet then others, r still occupied for hours in mental activity and entertainment and predisposed to be restless with for instance reading, mental games, medical journals or any amount of pumping and filling the brain with distractions. They too find resistance to very much time with spiritual meditation.

It literally amazes me that people will spend long hours on crossword puzzles card games on the computer playing other games on the computer and listen to baseball games daily. Little do they realize that they are literally wasting their time in long hours of spiritually useless activities. All these things will pass and when we leave into the next life all we will have to show for what we have done here is what we have given to others and our own spiritual realization to have the grace to go awakened while going to other realms or sleeping and dreaming... never awakening and then ending up here or somewhere similar again with a whole new set of 'attractions' to hold our interest and keep us occupied in more nonsense that create new desires that involve more sojourns here and in other terrestrial worlds where we must be drawn to fulfill more desires. So one eventually asks themselves; Should i spend long hours meditating or long hours in foolishness... creating new desires and boring stays here on earth and similar low energy planets at low times as well?
