Title: Guided Meditations
Post by: Jitendra Hy-do-u-no-us? on Oct 09, 2016 08:59 pm
I spent many days going to SRF guided meditations at the Lake Shrine on Thursdays. These were conducted for the general public as well as veteren meditators. I found them very helpful and at times found my self going into deeper states then meditating alone. Sometimes we were privileged to have the monastics guide us during long meditations at for instance long meditations at the Hollywood Temple on Friday nite as well. Although each monastic had their own way of guiding us there were some techniques which were similar which I intend to to put here and help others as well as refresh myself.

What I found are these reoccurring techniques.

1. breathe in deeply to the count of 10 holding the breath to the count of 10 and then breath out to the count of 10.
Count to the speed that is comfortable for you and your breath capacity. Do not breath from the chest but rather take deep breaths from the stomach up to the chest. Using diaphragmatic breathing. This is a technique I taught in yoga classes and it was also used at the guided meditations, although we were sitting up in meditation; this technique works well in the savasana pose as well. Also known as the corpse pose which is a form of relaxed lying down.

Another. technique was that of affirmations;  said at first loudly and then more quietly until in a whisper. After a while they were said only mentally until they became part of our being. It is a good way to quiet the mind and focus it on one thing while reinforcing the affirmations intention and meaning.

Breathing for relaxation and drawing in cosmic energy was used quite regularly. In this case double breathing which is : a short inhalation followed by a long one and a short exhalation followed by a long one. If you have taken the srf lessons you would be very familiar with one. There is one more added function. After you taken the short inhalation followed by a long one tense the body and then relax it as you exhale short and then long. Do this several times. The last time breathe in longer and exhale .  Then completely relax leaving the air out of your lungs for as long as it is comfortable. After that and you need to breathe in do so watching/being aware of the inhalations and exhalations of the breath.

Guided visualization meditations from the lessons were also used as given in lessons 100 and 102 (Self Realization Fellowship Lessons). There are several guided meditations and those type of guided meditations are also used for visualization at the Thursday afternoon meetings.

I keep coming back to these guided meditations because they prove an important point and that is that there's quite a routine in the srf techniques but also there's room for a lot of change in the use of guided meditations and looking at meditation from a different way than the regular routine.  I really enjoyed doing the several guided meditations in these two lessons and I continue to go back to them and incorporate them as a pleasant diversion to the regular routine that we as students practice.

This is a technique that is in the lessons and in the SRF Magazine from Yogananda. i thought it interesting in the sense that it is one that has been presented to the public:. It was used at the guided meditations and at the 3 hour meditations at the Hollywood Temple on Friday nite also.

Center the attention in the spiritual spine start by saying and visualizing:

Om Coccyx

then moving up to the next chakra:

Om Sacral

Om Lumbar

Om Dorsal

Om Cervical

Om Medulla

Om Christ

Then reverse the process going back down to the Coccyx
