Neptune in Astrology

Neptune is the planet of faith, trust and hope. A person with a Neptunian outlook on life may see the world with special perceptions. He may be naive or simply have the expectation that other people are motivated by the same high altruism as himself. ... However, he is the very person who can create the exact conditions he needs and wants in his life, simply because of his lofty dreams and conceptual ability. - Jeanne Avery

The house containing your Neptune is your direct expression of spiritual consciousness, the department of life in which you can be qualified to lead others to establish Faith, the focal point of your idealism, your capacity for establishing Heaven-on-Earth. Through your Neptune house the Divine says, "Be ye the voice for my words and the hands for my works." - Elman Bacher

From Neptune we find those influences that make the entity often called by many one that acts most normal under the influences of hunches, mysterious thoughts, signs, impressions, that to others are imaginative; but that to the entity are the right thing... - Edgar Cayce

An entity that ... will be peculiar to other people, rarely ever being understood; yet one with the spiritual insight of the developing in [the] earth plane, and one whom others would be, could be, benefited by, by being in contact with this entity. - from Edgar Cayce readings

Neptune sensitizes individuals to become their own teachers by attuning them to the reality of the unseen, the immaterial forces of life. - Jane A. Evans

Basic mental characteristics: Being essentially supermental, the mind is concerned with profound and inexplicable concerns. The native will be interested in the occult and the mystical, and will succeed in enterprises which are beyond the mental capacity of the average individual. - Manly P. Hall

Neptune ... is a factor in the human psyche which shows to advantage only when the 'test' of Saturn has been passed. ... After this mastery has been won over form, there follows the stage of Neptune ... the Ego, as the centre of consciousness, is no longer experienced as the centre of the psyche; it is now integrated within the psyche as a part of the Self. - Karen Hamaker-Zondag

Neptune - Consciousness of Divinity. ... Its position on the Sefirotic tree is at the Crown at the top, and here it is also the connection with what is beyond. ... which means the power of Divine or Providential intervention is possible via the Neptunian principle. - Warren Kenton, The Anatomy of Fate, Kabbalistic Astrology

What's behind Neptune's nebulous urges is an essential impulse toward transcendence. Neptune represents that portion of yourself which seeks to rise above ordinary, mundane existence and to touch some greater glamour or some greater meaning and purpose. Neptune can put you in touch with higher realities... - Beth Koch

Neptune ... is instinctive and intuitive rather than intellectual. It is not bound by the rules of the logical faculty, and its conclusions are based, in part, upon evidence not furnished by the five senses. When prominent for good, therefore, Neptune may assist the manifestation of genius, may inspire the mind with ideas derived from inner planes of nature ... To come under the true influx of this planet's nature means spiritual awakening of the highest kind. - Alan Leo

It is only by cultivating all manner of beauty and selfless thought that the eternal soul is given Neptune's substance. ... Neptune could be called the educator of the soul, the link between God and all souls that offer good freely to others without thought of compensation. - Leonora Luxton

Since Neptune relates to the inner self, it also rules the finer qualities and vibrations of the soul which are most readily discerned in any artistic endeavour. - Cordelia Mansall

The vibration level of Neptune is so high, that we are moving on the level of oneness. It is the level of clairvoyance and miracle-making. A neptunian, in the best sense, is a religious mystic or an artist, who can mediate images from this higher reality. Borders between the physical and the spiritual reality have become dissolved... - Irma Nummenpää, Finnish astrologer

Neptune is a most mystical and, from the level of the Soul, a most benefic influence in one's life. ... for Neptune comes to us from the Soul level as the Initiator, planet of the Christ. - Alan Oken

Neptune, when functioning in its purest essence, is a highly spiritual influence on the life. It brings the illumination of the indwelling Love Presence, and serves as a vehicle of sacrifice so that impurities (desire-ridden personality expressions) are reborn into more wholesome expressions of the Love that is the Light. - Alan Oken

Understanding wholeness and cosmic connections, idealism and philanthropy are Neptunian characteristics in a positive sense. In spiritual life well-channeled Neptunian energy has a key position. It has creative potential which when balanced can help us to find new dimensions in life and to dedicate ourselves to them. - Outi Parhi, Finnish astrologer

We may look to Neptune to guide us to where the person is looking for his ultimate values in life. In this sense, Neptune may be regarded as Venus in higher manifestation. - Christina Rose

Neptune evokes the appearance in the consciousness of the visionary image of what might be or should be. The Neptunian individual tends to be the dreamer of utopias. His or her function in a culture is important because man cannot actually produce what he has not first imagined, imprecise though the images may have been. - Dane Rudhyar, The Astrology of Transformation

The Neptunian paradox is that freedom most often has to be reached through the experience of bondage - not apart from it. ... The being who is truly free is he who is beyond choice, because having been totally and irrevocably identified with one way of life he simply cannot choose any other way. The Bodhisattva, who has reached a pure spiritual and all-encompassing state of consciousness, cannot not be compassionate. He is compassion. - Dane Rudhyar, The Galactic Dimension of Astrology

Neptune is a feminine force which allows us to sacrifice the goals of the ego and to immerse ourselves in the whole, in the void of the cosmic womb, returning with richer imagination, inspiration, greater sensitivity, receptivity, and human dedication. Neptune is linked to dreams, intuition, imagination, illumination and true mysticism. - Barbara Schermer

The essence of Neptune consists of developing attunement to universal love and universal beauty and thereby building a sense of at-oneness with the entire universe which will ultimately bring us perfect peace and joy. - Pauline Stone

Neptune in the Houses of the Natal Chart

Neptune's position by house in the natal chart (that is, the house that Neptune occupies in the birth chart) reveals an area of life where we tend to ignore or avoid reality. We attach spirituality to the areas of life ruled by the house. Often, we chase dreams and illusions in these areas of life.

When trying to understand some of the effects of Neptune on the affairs of the house that Neptune occupies, it is helpful to think of the following example: if two people have decided to split the cost of an item, and that item is five dollars, what would they do if nobody had any coins? The Neptune person would insist on paying three dollars, and let the other person pay only two; and the Neptune person would insist that the other individual never pay him back. This is a simplistic example, but it is illustrative of the character of Neptune. Wherever Neptune is in your chart, that is where you cut others a better deal than you do yourself. This, obviously, doesn't always have to do with material goods. You cut others slack, often at the your expense, in this area of life; you are trusting and idealistic.

So, if Neptune is in the 6th house, the native may easily gloss over the details of managing day-to-day affairs. Perhaps the person has adopted a philosophy that life means more than just sticking to routines, making lists, and organizing bills to pay. Another real-world manifestation of this position is the tendency to give in to co-workers, or to not take credit for one's own hard work.

Or, if Neptune occupies the 8th house, then money and business affairs involving others are literally involved. If a more aggressive personality seems to want something more, the native will simply cut them a better deal.

Similarly, if Neptune is in the 7th house, the native may tend to give more to a partnership (including marriage) than he/she takes. There may be a tendency to wear rose colored glasses when it comes to the selection of a partner, in an attempt to find a "soulmate". The native must take a step back, consciously attempting to see their partners and relationships for what they are, rather than what they wish them to be.

The following interpretations come from the Kepler program:

 Neptune in 1st House

You are yielding, gentle, and impressionable. You tend to "melt" into your surroundings, and do not make a very powerful, vivid impression on others. Especially while young, you may not have a very clear sense of identity.

Sensitive and compassionate, you do not enjoy fighting and no matter what you profess, you are a pacifist at heart.

Neptune in 2nd house

You may have a great deal of confusion over money, financial matters, and ownership. Perhaps these things mean very little to you. Or possibly you simply don't know how to deal with them in a realistic, effective way.

Also, you may make your living through artistic, musical, or highly imaginative endeavors.

Neptune in 3rd House

Daydreaming, lack of concentration, and inattention to your surroundings can be problems for you. Your mind tends to wander unless you are using it in an imaginative, creative way. Dry facts and cold logic hold no appeal for you, and unless a subject has a colorful or personally inspiring element, you won't stick with it for long. You have a sensitive, intuitive bent.

Neptune in 4th House

Your childhood and early home life were colored by a great deal of confusion or by people with unusually active imaginations, aspirations, or fantasies. It is difficult for you to see your childhood and your relationship with your parents in a clear, realistic light. You may search for the ideal, loving home you wish you had, or believe you had, when you were a child. Finding inner peace and a sense of emotional security within yourself is important to you.

Neptune in 5th House

Your creative self-expression has a very imaginative quality, and you have a particular affinity for drama, theater, film, and other artistic mediums in which creative fantasy plays a major role.

In love and romance, also, you often have glamorous fantasies that have little to do with reality.

Neptune in 6th House

You have a sensitive physique and may have allergic responses and sensitivities to foods, medicines, or anything you take in from the environment. Emotional stress and confusion seem to affect you physically, even more quickly than they affect other people.

Neptune in 7th House

You often have very naive, idealistic, or overly romantic attitudes toward people, and it's difficult for you to see others realistically. You may prefer to keep your relationships on an idealistic or platonic level, so that you don't have to deal with the more prosaic, earthy, human aspects of relating.

Thoroughly investigate potential marriage or business partners, as your gullibility and desire to see only the best in people may blind you to the truth about others with whom you form a close alliance.

Neptune in 8th House

You have a very active imagination and powerful fantasies. You may develop an interest in the supernatural, psychic phenomena, or occult subjects. You may have strange fantasies and/or nebulous fears of "ghosts", "the astral plane", or death. It's better for you not to dabble in such areas unless you are thoroughly grounded in the practical world as well.

Neptune in 9th House

You love to dream, fantasize, and speculate. You are willing to entertain the most far fetched ideas and philosophies, since to you anything is possible.

Anything exotic, alien, or faraway holds a great attraction for you. You can have very otherworldly beliefs which are quite impractical and irrelevant to your everyday existence.

Neptune in 10th House

You are a very idealistic person, and you want to see your ideals, hopes, and dreams made concrete and real in the everyday world. You are driven to put your ideals into action.

When young you may be rather aimless or confused about your place in the world. In early adult life it is likely that you struggle to find ways to express your imagination, fantasies, and ideals in your career. Work that involves compassionate service (such as medicine or the ministry) may be your calling. If you lack personal integrity and honesty, you quickly go to the opposite extreme and you can con others through dishonesty and trickery. Music, art, film-making or entertainment are also areas in which you are well-suited.

Neptune in 11th House

You are idealistic in your social and political outlook, and your ideals may impel you to join clubs, organizations, communities of like-minded people, or groups that share your vision and your concerns.

Neptune in 12th House

Compassionate and extremely sensitive to the emotional tones in the atmosphere surrounding you, you are naturally "psychic" or able to sense and understand much about a person without talking to them or knowing them consciously at all. You are deeply interested in the hidden realms of life and the afterlife. Your powerful sensitivity may also remain latent or repressed through much of your life and then be fully awakened in adulthood.

i just spent sometime reading some of these notes about Neptune in the natal chart. What i find interesting is that often transits represent a new slant to the house that these slow planets are visiting. For a while they represent an attitude that approaches the natal interpretations.

Lady Urania has Neptune in the first in her natal chart. This can represent anything from madness/insanity to being highly spiritual and psychic and being exposed to these elements of life. i suppose a lot has to do with the individuals take on it and the effort put out to work with the vibrations of this rather hard planet to manage. i often find that people with Neptune in the first or tranisting the first have a pleasurable vibration to me. Perhaps it is because since the unreality/fantasy of life is so much apart of their being that they seem to carry a certain magic about them. Also many of them like to be around music and water since Neptune rules these facets of this physical dimension in which we live.
