It seems like everyone around me lately has been suffering including myself. So i wonder will this develop compassion in me? i definitely think and become more aware of the pain that others feel when i experience pain. Is this part of the explanation for pain; so that we can understand and have compassion for others experiencing it?

i have found that yes,  compassion arises from suffering.

pain.....is also put in it's place for learning / realization purposes / bringing us closer to god.....i believe.  when i encounter pain and suffering.....it is usually god i call to, for help.

is this not why we incarnate into body ??  in order to get closer to god again ?  ( for most of us it is the main 'reason'  , or a large part of the reason Wink)

In silence and stillness, I find peace.

I don't know if we are "given" pain to become more compassionate.

Becoming more compassionate to others can be a result of experiencing

suffering, though.  I think that many people need to feel more compassion

for themselves.  There seems to be a lot of unnecessary suffering...some

people are very hard on themselves.  Be compassionate with yourself!

Children, it is our duty towards God to be compassionate and loving towards the poor and needy. When somebody is suffering, we should sympathize and take pity on him. But that alone is not enough; we should be ready to help him because God is everywhere, in everything. When we develop compassion and love for ailing people. His grace will spontaneously flow into us. - Amma (Awaken, Children! V.2 Pg. 11)

In many ways we can spiritualize our lives... compassion being one of the most important. Being in tune with the needs of others brings us more in tune to our larger self that is within all of us. When we sense and see that larger self manifesting in those who have compassion for others we too become identified with a more expansive consciousness. We feel the bliss of that consciousness. When we practice compassion we express the love of God and we become that love.
