When I  was younger I spent many years helping to develop a couple of Buddhist groups and being involved with Buddhism. I became aware of the fact that many or most Buddhists do not believe or just really don't  want to talk about the idea and concepts of the soul, God or a guru. Not that they did not believe necessarily but that they didn't think it was relevant to their spiritual sadhana or path.

I hope Serena will share some of her experiences with mindfulness training. I wanted to mention that this is one important reason I avoided or wanted to avoid the word 'soul' in the name of our forum.  I was hoping to make this forum all inclusive and to all religions and spiritual paths. One does not have to believe in the soul or a guru or a God and still can follow a spiritual path.

Serena I wrote you a personal message but I could not send it so I  have redone it here.
Hope you enjoy your retreat and the meditation. It might be closer to your path than that of following a Guru.  Smiley

Love to you and all

Steve

In silence and stillness, I find peace.

I'm not a Buddhist yet I might share some of their thoughts on being.  I'd need to do a lot of research to see exactly where my beliefs meet Buddhist beliefs.

I believe that God is everywhere and everything.  That may be called "Non-Dualism!"

As for the Soul and Buddhism, I found this compilation of Buddhist views on the Stoa Del Sol website:

"THE SOUL IN BUDDHISM-

The idea of soul in Buddhism becomes complicated, because the Buddha...referred to such as "no-soul." The soul (or the self) is not real. [Sanford, SOUL JOURNEY, p. 67.]

To quote the Buddhist scholar Walpola Rahula: "Buddhism stands unique in the history of human thought in denying the existence of such a Soul, Self, or Atman. According to the teaching of the Buddha, the idea of self is an imaginary, false belief that has no corresponding reality, and it produces harmful thoughts of 'me' and 'mine'...It is the source of all the troubles in the world..." [Walpola Rahula, WHAT THE BUDDHA TAUGHT, Grove Press, 1959, p. 51.]

For the Buddhist there is no "individual enduring personality that is reincarnated, nor even an individual soul in anything like the Western sense." [Sanford, SOUL JOURNEY, p. 68.]

Rather, there is a constant reformulation of "personality in new bodies." This Personality is a Force at work, streaming through time and "never for a moment the same..." [Sri Aurobindo, THE PROBLEM OF REBIRTH, Sri Aurobindo Ashram Publication Department, 1952, p. 14.]

As Sanford puts it:

"Individual souls are 'no-self', to be likened to the flames of fire that are never the same from one watch of the night to another." [Sanford, SOUL JOURNEY, p. 69.]"

This one had to read this over several times. Buddhism has that quality in this description of breaking down all concepts including all the concepts of a God and labels given to the individual. I would say that Hinduism also ends up at the same place yet there are many more definitions of progress along the way. These definitions appear to be stumbling blocks along the way to Buddhism and result in slowing enlightenment. Modern Christianity denies the enlightenment that meditation seeks. It is caught up in paved streets of gold or fire and burning
Hells. It would take an Eastern interpretation of the Bible to find the meaning of 'the kingdom
of heaven is within' and its corresponding to the enlightened state of being.

It takes an adaptable mind to appreciate various definitions of reality that are only temporary and at the same time continue to perservere towards the lasting happiness we are all looking for
in the enlightened state of being.
