What is the eternal patience? It is that waiting we encounter in meditation when we do not seem to be making progress. It is the patience we have with others recognizing that every flower unfolds in its own time. It is ultimately the patience we have with ourselves when we keep making mistakes in life.

I feel that desire for "progress" in meditation is itself a hindrance to it. It is said that we are always in Samadhi but we are not aware of it. It is the machinations of the mind that keep it obscured.

Theoretically, contentment is better than patience. Patience is waiting for a desire to be fulfilled. Contentment is the absence of any desire to be fulfilled, which is fulfillment.

How would you say that one cultivates contentment?

I would say that it is not necessary to cultivate contentment. It is already there. The natural state of the self is contentment. It is only the machinations of the mind that obscure it. Here is a quote from the saint in my avatar. He is known as Neem Karoli Baba and other names.

“The real contentment comes only when there is no desire, no hankering in your mind for anything. How can you say that you have got everything and do not want anything more when you are holding an empty vessel in your hand? You might be saying this with your mouth, but there would always be the worry in your mind about how the pot could be filled, always looking from side to side with the expectation that somebody will come and fill it up. Well, how can you call this contentment? When one sees that when the pot before him is full to the brim, it is emptied, and when it is empty, it is refilled of its own – that is contentment. If anyone wanted to give him anything, he would show that the pot was full already. What would he do with anything more? Even if he wanted to share it with others, where would he put it? This is the real contentment and it comes only through the grace of God. When you have full faith in Him, full reliance on Him, when you can surrender everything to Him, then that grace comes to you by itself – you do not have to ask for it or make any effort. Such is the value of faith in God.”

Steve, I am a hypocrite I already explained this. I have a good theoretical understanding of these things but am not so far along in actualizing them. I have glimpses. Today in my meditation I realized how blissful it is to be nobody special. Not just on the theoretical level. I am still feeling the bliss from that meditation. It's such a burden being somebody-particular. But being-nobody-particarly-important is like a cool breeze. Like a vacation from myself. Ah.

Even if we may be content there are those that are not content with us.... always wanting a little more to tweak out of us. To what extent should we respond to their requests?

"we" shouldn't respond to anything. We are not the doer or the responder.

God is your boss.

Yes I know! It is hard to imagine he would want me to work so much that there us no time for meditation and energization... Yet I do feel that serving is important.

Well, I don't presume to preach at you Steve or "counsel" you as if I am some wise guy. But I do want to say that work is meditation if it is done with awareness. I say this from my own experience and supported by the advice of sages. Often what people call meditation isn't meditation. Anything one does from one's center is meditation. I think it is important to stress the fact that meditation and activity does not need to be divided. This is a false division. But one has to do activity with the right quality of consciousness. People work with a rajasic, or overactive, mindset. Outwardly, we may be very amiable with others - being good sports - and yet have no inner calmness. We may do herculean deeds, save the world, but if done from a restlessness consciousness it doesn't lead to yoga. As I have said on other forums, real karma yoga is not as much about the deed done as the consciousness with which the deed is done. This is not some "goody goody" consciousness, but a calmness and peace which is naturally uplifting. As sages have said, true karma yoga is action done without the sense of "doership", a less pronounced concept that "I am doing something".

Sometimes it is good to slow down ones actions to almost a ridiculous degree (although your employer may take issue with this). This is good for counteracting the rajas quality of the mind, I have found. If you are picking up a stapler, pick up the stapler in slow motion, as if watching yourself do it in slow motion. Are you present in the act of picking up a stapler, or are you entertaining 1000 thoughts? You know what I mean. As you practice this, you can speed up your activity without losing your presence of mind as easily.

  Grin

I apologize if I am telling you something you already know.

There are many people around us who would like us to speed up. Yet the mind can find all kinds of excuses for circumstances unrelated to the real need surrounding circumstances. That is to gain an understanding why such circumstances have visited us. Once gaining that knowledge.... implementing strategies to re invent ourselves.
