How did you first come to hear about your Master or Spiritual Teacher?

For sometime now I have been wondering about different paths we follow and how we met these teachers and Masters along the way. I just found this quote by Brock at another site and thought it would be a good way to start. Since we are followers of different Masters and teachers I hope everyone shares and we can learn from other paths in the process.

Quote from: brock;64712
Just curious and thought it would be interesting. I did a quick search and didn't find a thread similar to this one. So if you care to share, how did you first come to hear about Yogananda? Do you remember the circumstances or the first time you came across him? It doesn't have to be a long bio, just a brief explanation if you care to share it.

So, I was never really religious and never thought much about God as a teenager. It just seemed like such a goofy thing, uncool, and totally irrelevant. What I was into was music, rockstars, bands, artists. Anyway, I first found out about Yogananda by reading the story of Jason Becker, a famous guitar player from the 80's. He is an hugely inspirational guy who has touched untold lives with his story. I have dropped a link and encourage you to read more about his story.

To add to that thought:

"Saints did Jap (japa) and Sadhana for 10,000 years..., only then they could succeed in Jap, Meditation and Yoga. But people want to be expert within 5-7 months only." - Neem Karoli Baba

This avatar you have as a picture it is Neem Karoli Baba> Rite? I wonder about him. Never heard of him before you.

Thanks for asking about Neem Karoli Baba, Steve. He is a being that I would have a hard time doing justice. I don't even know how I got attuned to him. I really don't know, but connecting and communing with him really got me over some spiritual humps. Not that i'm out of the woods by any means, but he is important to me.

Of course, I've never met him on the physical plane. I came to know about him by reading stories about him, through websites really. He is fairly well known because he was Ram Dass' guru. It is said that he gave his blessing to the book "Be Here Now" which Ram Dass wrote and became a classic in the spiritual genre. He was the guru of Krishna Das. He was the guru of Bhagavan Das and many others. Among them he is called "Maharajji". I'm surprised you don't know of him.

..."He knew everything about me... that was like I was forgiven.. it think that prior to that I had a lot of things in my life that I didn't want anybody to know and I always thought if they knew they would not love me... He knew and he loved me.... In India they have an expression... God, Guru and the Self are one and the same."

This is what Amma said to me>>>>> "The Guru and the disciple are one"... I walked away and couldn't get the thought out of my mind. It opened my heart. It was like a dagger that cut into me and released so much bliss and love. It is really strong; the love that can change your life. When it happens... even once you understand that everything is beautiful, everything is the way it is supposed to be, and everything will be OK. All I could think is: Please don't go..... Don't leave.

It was wonderful. I enjoyed it tremendously what a gift to be in the presence of these great ones. Even to be in the presence of their followers... their only desire is to liberate us.

Very nice to be in the presence of people like that, or even places. Sadly, I've yet to encounter anyone like that.

Amma comes the U.S. Every summer.... see her... you may also enjoy the presence of Swami Pramananda should he be in your area. I also enjoyed seeing Karunamayi. People have told me it is quite an experience seeing the Dali Lama.. haven't seen him yet. Perhaps you may have to put a little effort in getting in the presence of such people but there is also the strong chance they may have a major transforming effect on your life. I can say that for me personally I had nothing less than a major breakthrough with Amma. With Swami Pramananda I witnessed something i had never seen in my life and he never said a word when we received his darshan. Going on pilgrimages to Yogananda's sights brought a major healing and  seeing some of the SRF nuns and monks was indeed a blessing!

I believe that many times in life we forget that even though it is important to have teachers and Masters the Lord can work through all kinds of people, places and things. Sometimes little insects can serve the purpose of showing affection. I have noticed that just making the effort to go to monasteries and spiritual services has given me so many insights. Now that I am in Michigan again nature herself is one of my main spiritual guides. She shows me peace and reflection and gives me pause... pause to experience... experience the vastness of spirit... The occasional inspirational bliss that oozes out of the relation ship of being in the peace of solitude and meditating alone and with others in that interiorizing environment. Spring is coming!

True, every movement, thought, vision, etc., is a reminder: if we remember that.

So I haven't felt the need to seek out saints or sacred places, although I cannot deny their effectiveness.

My reminder yesterday was, not a revelation but intriguing.

Short story I had to pick up a child at school and bring home, in the middle of my work day, was ready to go and car wouldn't start. I know cars well enough, must be the fuel pump or relay. (Don't ask how I know, suffice to say I was really into it in my early days), But I tried and tried, would not start.

So I made an attempt to take the bus, walked 15 minutes to the bus station, waited there for at least 50 minutes. Couldn't believe it was taking this long, the schedule showed there should have been 2 there by now. But I'm standing there with a lot of other people, and it's really interesting yet somehow sad. I don't have to take a bus, I'm not rich but I do OK, and I got to talking to some guy, asked if I could use his cell phone to call the school. (I don't own a cell, never will hopefully). Nice guy though. Hands me his phone and it's just battered broken, still works. He tells me he gets up @ 4 each morning to take the bus 2 hours to get to work by 6. I know where he works, can't be making much money. Lot of people around the bus stop, just feel sort of sad but not attached for some reason.

Anyway I end up walking back to work since the bus never came, couldn't wait any longer, and also I used his phone one last time I found someone had helped the child get home. Well I was running quite late at that point so they found a way home.

I get back to work, then had someone give me a ride home. Waited until about 9PM, and called AAA for a tow, drove my other car down there to meet him. I got there first, and I thought, well let's just try it, and that car started right up. Not common IME. So I decided to drive it home and pick up the other car tomorrow, and I'm sitting there waiting for the tow truck so I could let him know it was a false alarm, waiting, waiting, never shows. Just like the bus. I ended up finally leaving for home and canceled when I got home.

During all this, I get sort of attitudish. With people at the bus stop (not the guy who lent me his phone though), AAA, and just in general. It's weird, I'm not really irritated that this stuff happens, just impatient I guess and very curious.

After I got home I thought, I didn't handle any of that very well. And what insignificant all these things were, just think if something major were to happen. Oh well, I didn't do well in the battlefield yesterday, petty as it seems.

Mine was learned in a dream, and was able to communicate with me from beyond his grave.

I believe a true sign of a master is one who is able to speak to you after their mortal passing.

Not the only way, but definitely a way.
