That's why SY's remark sounds snutty. He could afford not to be a slave because he had real estate, in other words he was rich.

 What about all other people who cannot afford that? As SI says, even when you have your own business you are a slave of the system. I've been leading my own consultancy business for a couple of years now but I'm closing it. I'm simply a slave of the system, to be competitive I have to practice low prices. Also, people won't pay. To recoup the credit (when possible) I would compromise my standing with clients. I feel less of a slave with my government job, although it can be dull at times.
