As spiritual beings we are introspective and reflect on what has happened to us. We look for clues to our own circumstances. We look for clarity and seek spiritual liberation. We make attempts to understand what has happened to us and the reactions and behaviors of those around us. Often significant events happen in our lives that determine future outcomes and circumstances. Many times we cannot control these situations. But we can control our reactions and gain understanding. Is this not part of the process? We gain wisdom in the process or we continue to fall prey to the same circumstances.

Some of us will never change when life deals these cards out to us. This can often lead to mental illness and rigid stances that slow and stultify spiritual progress. Often we witness this in others and can understand and describe the mental turmoil they are subject to. This results in an appreciation of what we learn about people we meet in life and deepens our understanding.  We can gain much and find that in all circumstances God and Guru have a plan for our lives and are helping us grow spiritually even if it is through dark forces that come into our lives. Even dark forces at times can see the light and can make a 180 degree turn around. I have seen it happen. We must identify the dark forces and find the pearls of wisdom that they are meant to awaken.

As I was saying... often we witness this in others and can understand and describe the mental turmoil they are subject to. Mental illness can often be found in spiritual aspirants as well. Perhaps this is because states of altered awareness are common in spiritual as well as mental derangement. Experiences of this nature may not coincide with the spiritual maturity to integrate these experiences into social life.

As a result we witness bipolar states, substance abuse, boderline personality disorder, passive aggressive behavior, obsessive compulsive expressions and sometimes various forms of psychosis. Often these people live in various degrees of sheltered existance so they are found in spiritual groups and around spiritual aspirants. It is important to recognize this if you are involved in meditation groups and monastic settings because it may go unnoticed until you are faced with various quirks arising from interpersonal relationships that manifest when stress is a factor in decision making and cooperation with others.

People who would like to help and serve spiritually speaking will ultimately face this issue and may find they are a magnet for people who have psychological challenges. Being a healer can also bring fall-outs in personal relationships when expectations are not met in the minds of those suffering such turmoil. At these critical junctures in relationships you find that suddenly someone will break-off a relationship or react in very parculiar ways because of the mental attitudes i have described.

Also it is not easy to always assess to what degree we can help without taking on some of the darkness that surrounds those who are suffering. I say this because I have encountered many people who recognize the importance of spiritual life but nevertheless are mentally not prepared to face stressful challenges that face their lives. Being ill-equipped to face the world and interpersonal challenges; their reactions manifest as various forms of mental illness despite the fact they have a basic understanding of spiritual principles. The ability to have introspection and find viable solutions seems at times non existent or severely limited.

During the 'Dark Ages' terms like evil spirits were used to describe such states. Nowadays you here of people using the word 'darkness' in people who have 'issues'. Psychologists use demystifying descriptions and use labels that describe various behavioral manifestations that are reactions to environmental stimuli. The point is to recognize what is going on with others and to realize that often it has little or nothing to do with our own mental balance except perhaps to gain understanding and compassion for what we see happening in the world around us. We also can gain glimpses into ourselves by our own responses to these people and situations.

I have been wearing less and less leather over the years and finding eggs that are found where animals are not in for instance 'chicken penitentiaries.'  i have been a vegetarian most of my life. i cannot even imagine forcing animals into little stalls where they cannot move and then taking them to slaughter houses and chopping there heads off. We must come to terms with the fact that people do this and people buy these products that come from mistreatment of animals. When it is possible we should find people who are kinder in their farming practices... At for instance farmer markets and wayside small farms where farmers have a personal relationship with their animals. It is a tribute to the Indian people revere their animals because - among other things they bring them their food to eat... cheese.. butter.. milk but not meat.

We must also come to terms with the fact that there are human beings who will leave you at a moments notice. People who will accuse you falsly. People who will lie about you. People who will try to ruin your reputation. People who will call the authorities and try to remove you from forums like this. This is because evil, darkness, cruelty and mental illness exist. Most of us are beings of light here but we must recognize also that there are dark forces of maya that will always try to retard our spiritual progress. I could tell you many such experiences. But would this help you?

I think the point is to recognize that we also are often faced with many trials along the way. They come in the form of some the most unexpected quarters. From a so-called-spiritual friend or loved one. From people on a spiritual forum. Let us identify actions when they are evil and unkind otherwise we may never be able to accept the fact that people do evil and dark things and they do believe that they are justified in doing them. They will blame you for their own despicable actions.Of course this is the exception rather then the rule but still we must be aware of all the pitfalls of the spiritual life.
