Awake: Unique biopic about Yogananda, author of The Autobiography of a Yogi. In the 1920s, he brought Hindu spirituality to the West. This tells the story of his life and influence on yoga, religion and science, combining re-enactment, interviews, and verité.

Got a chance to really dip into this film since a friend had it where i was staying for a week. Yogananda had to find a place to get started and take hold in the U.S.  while touring he found Los Angeles the most receptive and more people wanted to see him there then anywhere else. Los Angeles has always has been a city more receptive to new things. I felt that way myself in the 13 or so years i spent out there in my life.

I saw a few gurus in L.A. just a few years back...Swami Prabanananda, Amma and Amma Karunamayi. I saw many Brothers of SRF as well. It is a very receptive city. People are much more open to searching and seeking new ways of looking at life.

Its a place where i saw very little if any judgement about life style. Their is much more acceptance there. I remember listening to a man who came into a music shop i had there near Malibu and in Topanga Canyon at the time. He spoke rather derogatorily about yoga and kundalini power. I asked him where he was from he said; Georgia.
