What is work really for? A relevant article.

One of the best spiritual practices is to consider that we serve God in all we do. In this sense work is not a burden but rather a joyfull duty given to us by God/and Guru. Service gives us many valuable lessons on the spiritual path that gives us awareness of what we truly are. Perhaps God does the most work by maintaining the cosmos. Saints and Masters are always busy serving.

There is a little dualism in that approach karma yoga although it is good. Speaking at least for myself, It's even better to take up the thought that "I am not actually doing anything" or constantly ask "Who is this doer?". The mind can still thrive in service when the server sees himself as separate from those being served or has a strong sense of doership as someone really busy doing something. One gets it in the mind that, "Oh, I am such a good boy." In the eyes of an awakened being there are no others, and one serves only one's Self. God doesn't just maintain the cosmos, he also acts your role as well - although you think it is "you". Because you are That, which has taken on a limitation ("you").

I remember reading a story about Neem Karoli Baba, who was watching as people were eating Prasad. He turned to Dada, his devotee, and said, "Look Dada, I am eating through all of those mouths."

It seems as we get closer and closer to the truth we break more and more concepts down and experience as awakened beings.
I have a 'boss' that I am sure God put in my immediate 'work' situation to break down my concepts. I spoke to him about some safety/mechanical issues with the truck I am driving and told him I called a mechanic about it and he said; 'oh Steve.. oh Steve'
I told him that I thank God that he is light hearted.

What do you make out of it?

I think God just lightens us up thru unexpected people and situations, to shake us out of our mental programing and stultifying moods. What's your take on it?

'A man who accepts a job under anyone is a slave.' That impression became so indelibly fixed that even after my marriage I refused all positions. I met expenses by investing my family endowment in land." - Sri Yukteswar

Sri Yukteswar had a pretty snutty attitude, that was probably the flaw which kept him anchored to the body. It is told that very great saints must have one flaw otherwise they wouldn't be able to live in teh material plane.

Such attitude is well described by his own disciple Dasgupta.

I wish I could do something like this. I have worked almost every day of my life since I was 13 or 14. Even when I had a business of my own on the side I still had bosses, self employment does not free you at all.

I don't mind work, at all, but the money system and society and people is what I get tired of.

That's why SY's remark sounds snutty. He could afford not to be a slave because he had real estate, in other words he was rich.

What about all other people who cannot afford that? As SI says, even when you have your own business you are a slave of the system. I've been leading my own consultancy business for a couple of years now but I'm closing it. I'm simply a slave of the system, to be competitive I have to practice low prices. Also, people won't pay. To recoup the credit (when possible) I would compromise my standing with clients. I feel less of a slave with my government job, although it can be dull at times.

When I worked for the state I honestly felt a true soulless environment. Right down to the fluorescent lighting.

I'm luckier. I'm working in an office where there is a fair and honest, uncorruptible technical boss. I work with two engineers with whom I'm perfectly all right and with friendly terms. There has been some backstabbing but from other offices in different regions. I cut all relationships with the backstabbers and with most outside colleagues. I do not forgive, this is a main flaw of myself which I'm aware of. If I'll have the opportunity, I'll make sure to take Revenge on the backstabbers. If not, I'm surely not obsessed about it.

True enough though, the work is becoming exceedingly dullsville, it beats being penniless though.

I found that with the person(s) I have to deal with, I decided it's their actions, ego, that I don't like. I think we must strive to love all spirits, which I do in a way. But I don't think we must like or love an ego.
