A poor memory usually indicates a “butterfly” mind the flits from one object of thought to another, without giving it careful attention to each individual thing. Disciplined exercise of the memory is very important. You should link one idea with another. Connect certain ideas, persons, or objects with certain other things that are related and that are already firmly fixed in your memory.

Most people perform life’s duties absentmindedly. There’s a wide gulf between their actions and their thoughts. That is why they cannot remember much. It is necessary to put great attention upon whatever you wish to remember.

The reason you do not remember who you were before you came to this earth is because you do not possess divine memory.

Destroy our records that revive memories of unhappiness and evil deeds and unkindness. As soon as you have learned the lessons they brought you, scatter them to the winds.

~The Guru

I often will think of something and be taken up by another thought or try to remember something but put too much energy into it and when I let it go it suddenly comes to me.

A good way to develop this faculty is to recall all the beautiful things that have happened in our lives. We never tire of living in memory are agreeable experiences and good deeds. We should repeat them again and again in our consciousness are reviving good memories and by performing new good actions inspired by those memories.” PY

For instance I always recall the fortunate days I had being in the presence of SRF monks who I actually felt lighter in their presence; as though having a floating sensation.... or joy welling up in my heart by standing next to them ( I remember driving a long distance just to stand at sit in the presence of Brother Sarvananda, or in Amma’s presence or the afterglow of her presence. Or perhaps a sense of strength and resolve listening to them-in particular ... Brother Turiyananda. Or perhaps a sense of stretching my conscience awareness in the presence of Brother Ishtananda ..I remember being in the presence of Brother Bhaktananda and being struck by his humility and the sense that all was emptiness and was directed towards the grace of the guru. He would say things like; “If you want to stay in touch with the Guru read the SRF lessons.” And... “Always take a few moments during the day to stop and think 🤔 I am doing all this for you my Lord.” He said he used to say to himself that he loved the guru and once the guru came up to him and said.” I love you also.”

I remember many days of practicing visualizations of Amma’s prayers for wellness to Mother Earth by visualizing Rose petals falling on all the rivers, the trees, the forests, the oceans and all the animals and people. It was difficult for me to understand the benefit of this visualization. Then one morning I was dreaming and heard a song someone played for me with the lyrics; “ I love you. Like a rose touching a river. Right here in my heart.” I immediately got up and played it on the keyboards and sang it. It is a song I will never forget all my life and the lyrics were literally sang and played to me  to listen to as if to say; the prayers for others and Mother Earth were being heard.

This we may make our lives replete with better and better experiences. One way to develop your memory is to connect what you wish to remember with some outstanding event that has impressed you; then you won’t forget. Memory develops by the Association of one thing with another.

Sometimes memory won’t LET you forget certain impressions. It is therefore unwise to feed memory with the food of wrong thoughts and actions; through remember you will suffer inwardly, as well as outwardly from their affects.
