Actually, as Steve implies, chopping off animals to get nourishment is something Worth of a primitive and extremely barbarian society, not a civilized one.
It was OK to the prehistorical humans during glaciation periods, when crops did not grow and the alternative was starving. It is all right for eskimos, who cannot harvest fruit, nuts and vegetables nor farm cereals nor raise cattle for milk. Again, it can be OK if modern society crumbles down and people are compelled to hunt for survival.

The reality of it remains though, as Steve rightly pointed out. We are Killing helpless adult creatures and babies (lambs, calves., piglets...) to get bad nourishment for the body when there is plenty of good nourishment around.
