A few of my friends practice Buddhism, it seems to me almost everything is exactly what Yogananda is saying, except it appears they don't believe in God per se, but some kind of force, well same thing,

I read a good theory somewhere, saying that maybe Buddha did not teach that there was a God, simply because he did not want his followers to lean on a God, rather to concentrate on the Self for help. Otherwise, maybe back then, people might become lazy and think, well God will take care of it, instead of working on the Self.

Along the same lines of thinking, I read about another theory with Catholics & reincarnation, they (or whoever) decided that people would become lazy if they knew they had a second chance, so they might not try in this life. In other words, why worry if I will be reincarnated I can get a second chance? Maybe back in those days it was a real problem.

It could be, the real masters of this school most always accredit their feats to God though. They acknowledge their purpose is for humanity- they could very well leave this dense Earth since they have risen above our human drama. Their example is to show us our potential. It would seem all of this is for self-realization. Buddha was a man, Yogananda and Jesus too shared human garbs. Babaji incarnates as a messenger for the prophets of the Earth. These great souls probably know each other. Yogananda has said that Babaji, Lahirir Mahasya and Sri Yukteswar were at one time the incarnation of the three wise men. Buddha prophesized Jesus' coming. Our timeline must be very short for God to have these souls, avatars, run into each other through out our history. Their exchange is hard to imagine, but leaves for visions of Love from God. If this theory you read is correct, Buddha is teaching God without the limitation of label and his living was an example for many- it makes you wonder, what is God really asking of us? Is god a poet? Couldn't we just all be awake to our true nature if God is all powerful? Why would we come here to play these roles??? And why are we so drawn to these philosophies or masters, when our thoughts and forms will one day return to nothing...?

I suppose we could all be awake to our true nature without having to go thru all these human dramas but then where would be the dance of creation? Why have creation you may ask? Why not take such hypothetical discussions to their logical conclusion; Why have anything?

The Buddha; like all incarnations represented a certain form and expression of spirit. Spirit is not limited by human conceptions of how spirit should manifest. Once we form a conception of what spirit is we are often jarred out of those conceptions because our limited conceptions only confine our consciousness. This applies to our conceptions that we fall to about politics, friends, art, music, people and most everything else we encounter in life. Our expanding consciousness must incorporate larger growing realities : not just the realities our pea brains have constructed for the life we have experienced.

Couldn't we just all be awake to our true nature if God is all powerful?

Everyone is awake already, but that awakenness is obscured by maya. It is the same if you see a rope and believe it to be a snake. When you look at it more closely, you see it is not a snake. That seeing does not transform the snake into a rope, it was a rope all along. It is said to be like this. The ego seems to exist, just as a rope seems to exist as a snake. The snake doesn't exist only the rope does; in the same way, the ego does not really exist, it only seems to.  This seeming to exist has been referred to as maya, or even lila. In this maya, God appears to be an entity separate and alien to you. In fact, God is not different from you, but is your true nature. Through your dualistic perspective, you think God is external to you, and wonder about what his motives are. It is if the person looking at the rope is wondering why that snake is sitting there, whether he is about to bite, etc.

Through suffering and being miserable people long for happiness. They seek happiness, sometimes in these philosophies and masters. Since happiness is your real nature, you can't help but seek it, and the tendency is to seek it in external objects and concepts. That's why people go to a master who will tell them to look within themselves and stop seeking it outwardly, or in a dualistic way through objectifying concepts.

I think the dong has dinged; is it possible that this too may be an illusion? The snake is a rope and the ding never donged?

Nice to see you here again ding dong! I tend to believe that a Master can also open us up to ourselves. Because I have had that experience being in the presence of Amma. However I have also experienced so much maya in my own personal life that I am willing to recognize my own illusions as part of my life and also recognize that ego keeps us bound and confined in those illusions.
