You are ignoring a major point about going to college. There are required courses to take that apply to all circumstances. No matter what your ultimate plan these must be satified. Kids find out what their major will be while taking core courses.

i can say from my own experience that it is best to let young ones change their goals or find their goals after bring introduced to the options, the instructors and practical considerations. To have some one make their decisions prematurely could destroy the purpose of college. A true education gives you the options to choose from and the time to do it plus the element of discovery that often leads to better decisions. This can all be done in the first two years Bernie is supporting... during the accomplishment of two years of core courses that must be taken anyhow.

A friend of mine paid for his daughter to go to college. 4-5 years. She got a 4 year degree. She started working in whatever she studied for. 6 months later she quit moved to CA and has standard blue collar job doing something else cause she's happy.

My friend is still paying off that loan. Typical story of someone who got free college therefore no reason to be serious.

Another friend of mine also sent his daughter to college. Got a 2 year degree in nutrition or something. Now works at Kmart, cannot find a job in nutrition. (no kidding)

He paid every penny of that tuition. Not very good planning now was it?

I worked in restaurants in the 80's and found a lot of wait staff had degrees, masters too. Why were they waiters? Because they still didn't know what they wanted to do, and so they decided just to make money instead. Could they spend a little time and think ahead maybe next time?

Another friend pays for her daughter to go to college for almost 5 years now. She has changed her major twice. This is costing her mother a lot of $$$ because now the classes she took most of them are worth nothing toward a degree.

Who paid for that? Her mother. Is there no realization of wasting time and money here?

I could go on.

But it's plain to see that dinking around in college whether your taking core classes or not, is a waste of everyone's time and most of the time it's someone elses' money. If you don't have a clue, then DON'T GO. Instead go work. Get a low paying job and work. Play around and play the I don't know game until you finally know. Then, get serious, and only then, go to college. Figure out all the classes you will need to take to achieve your goal, make plans well ahead of time, and get it together.

Interesting testimonial

The point is this; can people who do not have parents who can pay for college go? Do they have the same opportunities? No.
They do not. Even if they have well thought out plans. They do not have the same opportunity and they should have. Wealth should not determine ability to achieve but in this nation it does. Therein lies the unfairness. Someone with more intelligence, creativity and ambition may be stifled by the economic climate that limits their ability to express greatness.

Topics like this always have pros and cons, and can easily endlessly spill into something else, like,

If we all should have the same opportunity, and life isn't fair, then we should all have equal health and dental either free or very low cost. Also we all should have enough food so no one goes hungry. But it just isn't realistic.

My point was, most (not all) kids need to stop being apathetic, and lazy, and get out and learn how to support yourself. Society is not going to spoon feed you your whole life. I believe a person can learn more about themselves if they have to scrape by and count pennies, rather than a free ride. Sure it's nice to have free college. But it will be abused, and used by those who don't need it, or are too immature to make responsible choices. If someone else pays for things like that, most of the time, they learn 0.

Guys, another testimonial.

here in Italy college education has been almost for free for many years. I'm speaking 200 or 300 US$ per year, when I was there. Now it costs  more, usually from 1K to 3K US$ per year, if you con't choose some fancy college of economics. On top of that, of course there are the food & accomodation expenses if you are studying in another city.

There were people who would study seriously and quickly and make it in just about the time needed, there were others who would hang around, and be much slower, sometimes even wasting years without anything achieved.

In my college most people did get the degree in a reasonable time, very few people were just hanging around, some people changed course or dropped out.

I believe that paying for college sure increases your responsibility and avoids in part a waste of time. Given human nature though, cases as those described by SI will always be there. Paying excessively for college though takes away an opportunity which should be guaranteed to all, as Steve says.

There are monetary aids which compel students to take a minimum number of exams every year. That would be a reasonable compromise, which would just avoid idling.

That might help, if give away free college, require quarterly reviews (and testing) by college staff to see if there is direction and learning vs slothing.

I believe that you guys have a lot of constructive suggestions. Any idealistic political agenda needs realistic implementation to be sucessful.

That there is really no way to 'earn'10 billion  dollars which he says he has. Making that kind of money is dependent on the efforts and service of many people. Keeping many of those people at $7.50 an hour when you yourself have hoarded 10 billion dollars is nothing short of greed. I certainly do not want such a person being in charge of my country.

It is an irony of this nation that people are routinely put in jail for not having a place to live and sleeping in 'illegal' public areas.... while at the same time we do not put people in prison for stealing the services of others through slave labor.

So let him have his money. I don't care if he's greedy. There's millions of people who are greedy. Let others find better jobs if they're unhappy or get better education. If he ends up running the country, well, everyone complains about the president anyways, no matter who it was. As far back as I can remember there were always complainers about the president. I'm not going to worry about it. God has my worries.

Yes Bernie Sanders will help in this process of education and finding better jobs. Whereas in the present situation people cannot even afford education so they r trapped in cloneland robotic jobs and may b geniuses. What a waste of talent and needed service and creativity! We can have the status quo with a Republican presidential candidate when it comes to jobs and job training or we can move forward to progressive alternatives.

We have an election coming up. I am not complaining about our president but rather making distinctions in the candidates so that we make wise decisions about who will b r next president here in cloneland. How about u? R u complaining about the great president cloneland has?

A further look at what Bernie Sanders is all about:

http://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Sanders,_Bernie

Some of the issues that he stands for (taken from the article);

Since his election to the Senate, Sanders has emerged as a leading progressive voice on issues such as income inequality, universal healthcare, parental leave, climate change, LGBT rights, and campaign finance reform. He rose to national prominence on the heels of his 2010 filibuster of the proposed extension of the Bush-era tax rates for the wealthy. Sanders is also outspoken on civil rights and civil liberties, and has been particularly critical of mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act, as well as racial discrimination in the criminal justice system. He has long been critical of U.S. foreign policy, and was an early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War.
