The Chinese are very touchy when their territorial greed is poked. Do not let's forget they conquered Tibet and are brutally trying to erase the traces of their culture. This side of China is pretty Dangerous.

Quote
Chunying said the U.S. presence in the region was the “biggest cause of militarization” in the South China Sea. Last week, Beijing confirmed that it had finished work on two lighthouses on the artificial islands and pledged to build more. Last month, when Chinese warships entered the U.S. territorial waters around the Aleutian islands, the Pentagon said it was an “innocent passage.” It would be interesting to see how Beijing reacts when the U.S. warships sail near the disputed islands.

In this case the correct strategy appears to be the one described near  the end of the article.

This time, the White House has an intense interagency planning process underway to prepare for the looming confrontation. Options include an aggressive tit-for-tat strategy, in which the United States would help countries such as the Philippines and Vietnam build artificial islands of their own in disputed waters. The Philippines effectively took such a step in 1999 when it deliberately grounded a large vessel on a shoal in the Spratly Islands; it recently resupplied that vessel, while U.S. drones patrolled overhead.

It is quite apparent that in these authoritarian type governments like China, North Korea and Russia (i call Russia authoritarian because despite having elections outside agencies are not allowed to carry on their monitoring how the elections are conducted.)have many more abuses of human rights. We have no choice as people who want to have some choice in the affairs of our country but to assert our ability to navigate in international waterways and our continued presence to some extent. This is because other countries who have vagrant human rights issues will otherwise bully their way into other nations and force their will upon disputed seaways to proliferate their agenda.
