Buddha said "Desire is the root cause of all evil". With this in mind it appears to me there is no way to eliminate desire unless you find something more pleasant then the object of your desire. The only thing that does not perpetuate the round of more desire is the fruit and experience of bliss and higher states of meditation. Otherwise desire cannot be eliminated. That is a personal view.

Unless i am mistaken... these are your words. i would say desirelessness is a dedication to a spiritual principle. That is that the more desires we have the more baggage we have and the more problems. Those who have no personal desires and are not attached to the fruits of action are free. There is nothing to stop their spiritual awareness and expansion. Desire binds us to this body. Desire brings us back over and over to earth. Desires are endless because each time we come to the material planes there are new desires to attract us here and to attain or have.

i don't think there is such a thing as desire free for the spiritual aspirant.
i think there are things of value to desire... practicing mindfulness and compassion.
the desire to be healthy and beneficial to the planet.

You may be right Eric. It may be important to recognize the limitations of words and language when conveying ideas. i thought i would look up the word to see its actual definition:

de·sire
[dəˈzī(ə)r]
NOUN
a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen:
"a desire to work in the dirt with your bare hands"
synonyms: wish · want · aspiration · fancy · inclination · impulse · [more]
VERB
strongly wish for or want (something):
"he never achieved the status he so desired" · [more]
synonyms: want · wish for · long for · yearn for · crave · hanker after · [more]
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In the sense that we have a strong wish to have something happen, we want, wish, crave or yearn for something.... My experience is that people who are enlightened no longer have such desires. They accept things the way they are while working to make them better. Not saying i have the answers here just comparing our views. If there is desire as you say-to be healthy beneficial to the planet to be compassionate and to practice mindfulness;  is there attachment to these desires or the fruit of action leading up to their being fulfilled or not fulfilled? With desire, there is often a satisfaction with fulfilling such desires or on the contrary there is a 'let down' for not having them realized and satisfied. In the consciousness of enlightened beings there is no elation or depression associated with the end results. There is acceptance and appreciation. There is the recognition that everything has happened as it should have. There is a surrender to circumstances and the will of a higher force while at the same time continuing in actions that increase dharma.

For instance i really felt that John Kerry would have been a much better leader for our country and much more beneficial to the planet then George Bush so i supported him being elected. Now when he did not become president how did i feel? Was i attached to the results of my actions? Yes i think so. This shows a lack of spiritual understanding.. a lack of surrender to the results and an attachment to my efforts to support him. i might have also felt elation had he been elected. So u see i have much to work towards in my spiritual development but at least i recognize it. That is a big step forward.

Desire is a condition of disturbance and unrest of thoughts and feelings.... Only meditation yields this ever-increasing ever-new responding joy. Sooner or later you will realize that you want a thing only until you get it. Then you will start looking for something else. But in discovering soul joy, you will find that "something else" which you were seeking through the labyrinth maze of desires for false pleasures. You will never tire of this ever new joy of your soul which is of God -- Paramahansa Yogananda

It is not bad to 'want' somethings but is wise to remember that; 'Only the inner effort of meditation brings proof of the existence of joy unending.' P.Y. 'You will tire of everything else but that joy.' P.Y.

It is very difficult to meditate when we have so much desire. We may ask: what are all these desires you speak of that cause such restlessness in our minds that it is difficult to meditate? If we are sincere we will be shown and lead to the answers--the obstacles in our spiritual development-- the imprisoning desires that keep us circumscribed to a limited consciousness and circumstances.

Keep your eyes ever turned toward your shining goal— God alone. When He is yours, every desire of your heart will be fulfilled. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

Thanks Steve for resurrecting this thread and for such wonderful insights lately. Not that you are short of insight but that I am feeling open to your understanding.
Kind regards.

Hey Steve, the search function here isn't always the best, I know you've mentioned meditating in the morning somewhere and wanted to include your words in this post. When I type, "morning meditation" in the search function I get 37 pages of results. So I've got a bit of work to do where patience is concerned. Cheesy I am intrigued by this topic and find so much of what we are looking for to be relayed by the Masters so I hope you don't mind my excessive quoting of both Paramahansa Yogananda and Hazrat Inayat Khan.

How to be in the world but not pulled by its forces...
Quote
One who meditates daily and cultivates the taste for peace and contentment, gradually forsaking indulging in the in sense pleasures, has a chance for spiritual emancipation. A very good habit to cultivate is the one of meditating immediately upon awakening from sleep. After that period of meditation, filled with the offerings of the soul, one may enjoy, with no feeling of compulsion or sensory attachment, the self-controlled use of the senses in such pleasures as eating, association with friends, and so forth. In this way man finds that he is spiritualizing or changing the quality of all material enjoyments.

Deceived by desire....
Quote
The difficulty is that the spiritual beginner- and even the advancing devotee when he temporarily falls into a negative state- can scarcely distinguish between his reason-governed use of the senses and his greed-governed sense appetites. His bad sense habits, even if they appear to be under control and friendly, may be merely waiting for the right moment to destroy him with their temptations.
Paramahansa Yogananda from GTWA page 155.

Quote
Question: When Buddha said that we should have no desire, did he mean that we should have the attitude of a saint?

Answer: The Buddha never said that you should have no desire. The Buddha spoke of 'the man who has no desire'. It never was the principle of Buddha that you must not have a desire; Buddha was too wise to commit himself like this. What is meant is that we must develop so that one day we may reach to that stage where naturally we shall have no desires. But if we have a desire and say, 'Because Buddha has said that we must have no desire, therefore we must throw it away', it is working against ourselves. It is just like a man who, having heard that a saint had lived without food for a very, very long time and had experienced exaltation, would say, 'Well, I shall give up my lunch every day if I can become spiritual by it '. He may just as well have his lunch because he feels hungry. The one who went without food was not hungry, he had risen above it. We must have principles according to our stage of evolution, and never take principles higher than our stage of evolution, forcing ourselves to abide by them.

Not all people have the same desires what may interest one doesn't necessarily have any attraction for someone else. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

“A soul, being invisible by nature, can be distinguished only by the presence of its body or bodies. The mere presence of a body signifies that its existence is made possible by unfulfilled desires.”
