The picture gallery is cool, the Mountain Village as you call it seems so removed from where I sit.

The first button on the left, insert flash, should just be able to click that then paste your link inside the tags. Preview will not show it as embed, only actual posting, for me anyways.

Thanks SI, I'm going to try that out.
This is a pic snapped from the road leading home. Typical Italian coastal hillside. On the background you can see the coastal town, then the Adriatic sea. 250 cliks further we'll come across the coast of Croatia.

Not sure about the 'toys' but really enjoy the pictures of u and the beautiful open countryside in Italy that u provided. The topography is quite different then this part of the U.S. lots of rippling rolling hills, mountains and there and open spaces. We have many more tress here... so it seems. Many forests. We could use some of that sand at small lakes in Michigan. It would be much more comfy on the feet... knowing what u r stepping into!

Steve, in Italy woods and forrests are usually much smaller than the ones in America, the larger ones are located within national parks (there are many here). Oftentimes the sand is used even here to feed the natural beaches, which can be subject to severe erosion. Many beaches are becoming narrower or are disappearing. The cause is the past exploitation of riverbeds (no more allowed), the building of dams, the possible, slow rise in sea level.

The beach is no longer the oen I remember when a young boy: wide expanse of clear and clean sand likewise clear and clean water. Now it's narrower, the sand is polluted by silt, the water is polluted by human fecal matter plus industrial wastes.

We must constantly let the public know the damage that more and more people are doing to our earth and its oceans and sky.

Steve, something similar happened here last year, on a far smaller scale. Theoretically, an efficient management of waste products should allow good sanitation even in crowded areas.

Point is that, as the facts confirm:

1- In Italy there is often no efficiency at all, just incompetence and inertia
2- In America it may be different (probably it depends on different places). The LA case though was an example of how unstable the system can be. It is not possible to make the system perfectly proof against accident, earthquakes or a floods

It is nice to hear that these big earth movers can serve a positive function. Usually i see them used to plow away wetlands, natural habitats and forests and then come the strip malls, houses and artificial edifices.

There is not presently such a negative connotation in Italy. Wetlands and forrests are protected, although in the sixties and seventies developments have ruined many nice places. In the town where I live they let builders build on the beach. This must be one of the uglier coastal towns in Italy, you walk by the beach and see just houses. We've had our lot of incredibly greed and obtuse politicians. Still have them unfortunately.

Some day i hope to see beaches open to everyone. We have lakes here in Michigan that the public cannot even get to because of ownership. It is a white mans invention. The Native Indians who lived here before us could not understand the concept.

We have similar situations here in Italy. Some stretches of beach, although being property of the State, are not accessible since they have been 'rented' to private owners (hotels or resorts) who block the access roads with gates. It happens where the beaches are located in between a rocky coast. Otherwise the access is usually free.

I never heard about private lakes, unless they are small lakes built by the land owners themselves in their properties.
