Lately i have been amazed what i have learned about observing anger in those around me. i have found that much of anger springs from a need to 'control' ones environment to have some 'control' in ones life. There are people who find they can not 'control' the attitudes and views of others. As a result they express various forms of anger. They cut people out of their lives, they may become belligerent, they refuse to listen to the views of others. i believe one of the most important lessons of spirituality is that we cannot control any one or any situation. Often this occurs when those around us seem to feel 'out of control' in their lives. At this time in particular there is more likelihood of trying to control their environment and the people in it. This is why surrender is so important in spiritual development. This is not our world... it is only a place we are observing. It is only a place that we were meant to be entertained by not a place we came to force our wills upon.

Steve, since I believe I know which is the episode which caused your ruminations I'm posting my considerations.

By objective examination can we say we had no part at all in raising the anger of others? Can we say we have been so psycologically keen to foresee and avoid any negative development with the others we've been dealing with?
Was it avoidable? Was it not? Have we written something which should have not been written? Or we didn't do anything we can reasonably think of as negative? Or we underestimated something we wrote that might have hurt the other person's susceptibility?

The analysis must be ruthlessly objective.

If after the analysis we conclude that the act of anger has been wanton and unjustified, or grossly exaggerated, or caused by unjustified hypersensitiveness then we must pray for the mental well being of that person.

If not, we must try and do better next time around.

When I carry out such self-analyses most times I find a flaw in my own behaviour, my own discrimination . Not always, but almost all the times.

mccoy in actuality i have not told you about the 'ruminations' that caused the original post here nor do i know a way that you could know.
In fairness to you though there are contributing conditions in other situations that you have no doubt witnessed. Your observations are helpful.

i believe you have made a good point. However am i angry in regards to your point? No... because i see it as someone trying to give helpful advice to understand the dynamics of human relationships. There are those who are not receptive to any such suggestion however kindly put. Instead they see the situation as your ego problem and my view is that all of us still have ego unless we can claim Christ Consciousness. In this case i have no anger. It has been quite some time since i have felt anger. Anger clouds reason and destroys relationships.

There are various ways of handling things. Anger and retribution being one way and kindness another. We cannot always know what we say that may cause anger in others. Also i believe you do not know what situations i am talking about only what you have observed. You have not been around to observe everything. Sometimes we have no choice in situations but to tell someone what they have done was not kind. However this does not justify cutting them out of our lives. Which i have not done. Although others feel that they must be vindictive because of what has been said and they retaliate. This is much different from telling someone that their actions have hurt others and can not continue without some kind of eventual action being taken.

i had a bit of realization in the last couple posts; It is possible that many of us may be learning something entirely different from our encounters with others that we did not originally see as part of the circumstances. That is: FORGIVENESS

Thanks for your thoughts!

i thought you may be interested. Since i doubt that the person involved will read this post i thought i would tell you what 'inspired' this post. You are a musician and may find it interesting if not comical.  Grin Ever since we have started to use 'electrical' instruments and equipment for sound production musicians have had various views on how much of it to use. Some taking a pure approach and using for the most part acoustic (no electric devices) instruments. Although we do have to use some electric devices to be heard. (example; microphones) Others choosing to use more modern day technology.

What actually happened is that i told a member of the group-- i am currently playing in-- that i had 'looped' a guitar part for a song i had written and 'looped' a bass guitar part for another song so i could play flute and sax on the those songs. Looping is a process whereby you record the song or parts of the song on a processor so that in a live situation the music you 'looped' (a modern day term for recording since we now use digital processors) can be heard and you can play solo instruments along with the loops.

When i told this to a new musician i have been playing with he suddenly got angry and told me that he no longer wanted to play together. He explained that i just 'don't get it'. He 'only plays the drums' and wants the sound to be acoustic. i tried to explain that it was just for a couple of songs and the audience enjoys hearing me play sax and flute and that i intended on playing mostly guitar and keys. He also asked me 'why can't you play for instance a song that is on keys (the keys also being an electronic instrument sometimes replacing the piano) on the guitar?' It just was rather unsettling because a friend was sitting across the room and heard the conversation because his voice raised to a crescendo and it was difficult to get a word in edge-wise.

It  has been an observation of mine thru the years that people who are practicing some form of spirituality may turn out to b much more angry, mean and intolerant then those that do not practice in a conscious sense. It has been helpful to me to be honest about this observation because it can save heart ache in others as well. Just because a person talks about spirituality does not mean they are spiritual or kind or are exempt from being mean. It is important to recognize this because it makes it easier to let them go. Although it is a truth that they may not be practicing a lot but rather just talking about it. i also wonder if it is possible that we may attract kind people from other walks of life just because we are also practicing and trying to be kind to others? Because that is another phenomena i have noticed.
