Meditation can have side-effects too. But, yes, it sparked a movement that has influenced the culture since the 60's. It sent a lot of people to India who would bring back their experiences and beads. Ram Dass being an obvious example. In most cases meditation doesn't have nearly as dramatic an effect as psychedelics, especially not right away. You aren't guaranteed to experience anything unusual when you sit to meditate. That's especially true for someone new to it. This is quite different from shrooms or LSD. You get the experience right away, for better or worse. Some people don't seem to ever get anything out of meditation at all and perhaps those people would benefit from taking some trips in controlled circumstances. The taboo is an unfortunate demonstration of how far the long arm of propaganda can extend. I am interested in how they will start to use it (and they will) in a responsible and intelligent way. In my world, meditation and these substances don't have to be assumed mutually exclusive. But I am aware that there are people who will never be convinced that these substances weren't forged in the fires of hell, just as there are people that will never be convinced that meditation is not possession by devils. They'd probably outlaw meditation if they could. But the cause of psychedelics isn't really my battle to fight at this point. Although, if I were looking for a crusade it might be a worthy one. I have a feeling that the researchers are starting to realize it can't be ignored much longer. As Leary said, "I learned more about the mind in the 6 hours that I tripped mushrooms than all my previous years getting my psychology degree from Harvard."

Good video
