Why is the Guru so important? There are so many reasons. However i find the most important one to be this: The Guru can take away our karma. That is why Amma has Pujas and rubs our backs. That is why Paramahasa Yogananda gave us the Kriya technique. That is why Jesus hung on a cross. To lift and take away our karma!

There is nothing like a Guru. The Guru is our freedom. The Guru shows us the way! We can only do so much with our techniques of meditation but the guru can bless our efforts. How can we stop our thoughts to experience the blissful state? The Guru can make it happen! The Guru can perform miracles in our life. i have witnessed them!

The Guru is the Savior. Ever to be thankful for! Always to be grateful for! The Guru can and does lift our karma from us. The Guru is our freedom from this mortal existence. i remember Paramahasa Yogananda say that all our past karma is lodged in our astral spines. Then later countless times when i saw Amma she would run her had down my spine. This is only one incident that i have seen in the Gurus ability to lift karma.

Over and above performing faithfully all one's duties, taking shelter in Me, it is by My pleasure a devotee obtains the eternal, unchangeable state. ~Krishna

Steve, the data you posted on energy use are interesting. Lots of plants do use lots of energy, so it is an index of industrialization fo a country. Also, I believe Russia is in the first places because of the huge need of heat in the winter months in its mostly cold places. They use mainly natural gas.

All other things are undoubtedly and unarguably true.  I still feel that developed countries act in an utterly irresponsible way, or are just uncapable to check demographic growth.

Western countries seem to be more responsible but are anyway congested and full of pollution. France has more than 40 nuclear power plants. That's an enormous number for a state with is far smaller than the USA. Where do they stash all the radioactive residual?

I live 5 minutes from the beach. This year though I won't send my son to the closest beach, since it suffers large pollution from fecal bacteria. I have to send him farther away, farther than the urban areas where pollution is rarer and smaller. Many coastal areas in Italy suffer the same fate. Reminiscent of the Michigan waters.

Yes i see your point. What made it so difficult for me to put that together after reading your whole statement again? Do we interpret the meaning of words thru our own bias? i believe that it is something we humans do all too often. It is interesting when incidents come up to prove it. It seems best to plead ignorant if we can not put things together that others are saying---- just to b on the safe side. There r unexpected spiritual lessons that happen in many ways in our life. We can be talking about something that is far from the spiritual lesson that is presented to us. Although to me this is another manifestation of the Guru helping us. Someone else may say oh that is just something that could happen in any conversation. i do not deny that. However when you begin seeing patterns and recurring 'lessons' coming up in your life it has the appearance of an intelligent design. The claim of a true Guru is that he or she can arrange events in our lives that help us in our spiritual unfoldment. That is what u r seeing take place here. U can give one example after another of the Gurus evidence in our lives. If someone says they do not believe it or they do not have it happening to them... You have to ask the question: have they chosen a guru for themselves and asked for such guidance? If they do not believe it is possible then they will follow their own path that does not include a Gurus guidance and wisdom. That is the choice everyone has and it is not for others to make such a choice for them. We can only make choices for ourselves.

"Lots of plants do use lots of energy" Not sure what u meant here. Actually plants absorb carbon dioxide which humans create in excess. So unlike humans they are beneficial to the atmosphere.  Plants create oxygen which is important to human life. As part of the carbon cycle, plants use light to photosynthesize carbon dioxide, turning it into carbohydrate to grow and releasing oxygen as a waste product. As a result deforestation aggravates the pollution problem further causes the greenhouse effect. Thus more humans equals less plants. It is obvious that the developed countries are much more responsible for earths atmosphere destruction then third world over populated nations because they (modernized countries) emit much more pollutants in the atmosphere per capita.

Steve, the above is an interesting example of linguistical ambiguity which can lead to substantial misanderstandings.
As a matter of fact, I should have written industrial plants. Maybe 'mills' would have been more clear, or 'industries'.

Memory is fragile and capricious; each of us remembers and forgets according to what is convenient. The past is a notebook with many leaves on which we jot down our lives with ink that changes according to our state of mind. Don't let the past and your rendition of it effect your mental balance senor Zeeky Zack.

Event after event, being here and being there. It does not not always make sense when it is happening. Yet in retrospect we recognize quite clearly why the Master has put us here and there. Having a Guru is just too awesome to even describe. His or her guidance in our life is just too amazing. Yet if u can trust something larger then yourself.... Something that is worthy of your trust... you will look back and begin to understand every twist and turn in your life and you will know... without a doubt the presence of the guru in your life.

In my case, the Guru has taken up the figure of the father, as far as wisdom and counsel go. This on top of the spiritual training.

My father was just not able to express wisdom, he had a materialistic mind but even in non spiritual matters he did not issue good advise and suggestions.

I'm fortunate that I came across the Guru pretty soon in my life, I probably avoided some reckless attitudes.

I wonder how many of us here had a strained relationship with their father?

Myself. It took me decades to understand its karmic significance. After surrendering to what we created in the distant past and what was happening between us i gradually was able to let go of what we created.

My relationship became strained with time. He became progressively more stubborn and senseless in his attitudes, in such an unpleasant way that he was just about the only person who could unnerve me.
Otherwise I was just aware of his limitations. Not everyone is so lucky to have an ideal father and I've been anyway the luckiest to meet a gigantic spiritual-father figure.

Yes i didn't have the ideal father either but i became very fortunate to have the blessings of Paramahansa Yogananda and Amma. i feel as though they are the rafts that have taken me thru much turbulent waters and have left me with peace many times in my life. Even when i did not expect it there were miracles being around such people and thinking about them while carrying their spirit with me as much as i can remember to do so.

Look into your soul mirror and if the reflection is something you like seeing you have become more interested....so get a deeper look into your SELF.
