I'm pretty much fascinated by extreme talent. As you say, sometimes it comes along with serious deficiences in other fields. Van Gogh grew insane of mind. Charlie Parker and many other musicians grew slaves of drug addiction. The most renowned mathematician in the world, Grigori Perelman has refused money  which he might have used for noble causes and has retired living almost like a homeless.
There are some other people though which are able to exhibit a reasonably balanced life together with extreme talent.

I myself have been searching for some hidden talent, finding none so far. I'm not over yet though. One talent of mine was physical fitness, which I blew away by unordinate training and subsequent injury.

i have seen various boons given for spiritual practice. i believe u will too-if that is what u r looking for. The Guru can see beneath our desire for liberation into all the smaller desires we harbor from life to life so he/she opens up the doors so we may face them and eventually eradicate them. Becoming famous or having talent in a certain field is just one more picture show most of us want to see. As u know it is difficult to know what new desires will accrue because of satisfying that one. It is easy to have a grasp of the fact that we are just causing more karma for ourselves but thru human eyes we still may desire living it even though we can grasp the consequences from a mental prospect. Can it really b so bad though to become aware of the service we may be good at in helping others and just what unique gifts we have to serve God? Yes surprisingly it can. Why? Because we can become attached to the people we have served. If we are truly attempting to serve God we may find that many other people and things we have served may b taken away.
