Maya (/ˈmɑːjə/; Devanagari: माया, IAST: māyā), literally "illusion" or "magic",[1][2] has multiple meanings in Indian philosophies depending on the context. In ancient Vedic literature, Māyā literally implies extraordinary power and wisdom.[3] In later Vedic texts and modern literature dedicated to Indian traditions, Māyā connotes a "magic show, an illusion where things appear to be present but are not what they seem".[2][4] Māyā is also a spiritual concept connoting "that which exists, but is constantly changing and thus is spiritually unreal", and the "power or the principle that conceals the true character of spiritual reality".[5][6]

In Buddhism, Maya is the name of Gautama Buddha's mother.[7] In Hinduism, Maya is also an epithet for goddess,[8] and the name of a manifestation of Lakshmi, the goddess of "wealth, prosperity and love". Maya is also a name for girls.[7][9]

What interests me about this concept is that we all create realities for others just as God has created this reality for us. We are responsible for the reality we create for those around us, it may be conducive to spiritual awakening or it may be an illusion we construct that leads others down dark roads. We often have to think: is this realty I am forming helping others find happiness or is it smoke and mirrors that create further suffering in other people’s lives driven by ego mania and self glorification and pleasure?

Why burden yourself with such thoughts? It is a hallmark of the ego-mind to attribute everything back to itself. It is like the man who waves his spoon with great passion and fury, conducting a pre-recorded ochestra *. In point of fact, all acts performed by the ego-mind which thinks, "I am doing this", have no ability to help the jiva realize its true nature. Even the acts that ego-mind deems to be good turn out, after all, to be useless for igniting the fire of awakenness is sleeping jivas. That's why it is said that it is much better to wake up yourself, rather than worrying about managing things (and characters) within your dream.

Self peace for world peace. You're both describing the same goal. Thank you for the enlightening thoughts. Good night Brothers!

I think the growing tension you see in the streets is a frustration with no hope. Our present leaders and followers of Trump have no vision for the future and have taken away the basic needs of the common person to support a royal class that treats the rest of us like serfs and ♟ pawns. People who consider themselves Kings and Queens ruling us and other nations they support; who have the same mentality and attitude of superiority. This kind of selfishness and insolence contributes to street violence and in many cases overthrow of corrupt governments as we saw happen in Frances’ revolution in the streets. But something good came out of it because the oppression from the ruling class was unbearable and no one should take continuous abuse lying down. It is important to recognize just how corrupt our present government is and how that influence has been the root cause to most of the violence you see today.

I believe like you that is important to see the God in all things. However it is also important to recognize the avidya or personal spiritual ignorance that many people have and not enable it. This often requires a conscious effort to destroy it. If people who are in control of our nation are so superior; they should be able to recognize their behavior and selfishness influences the whole population including those who may not have the same intelligence as they do. This can result in irrational and not well thought out actions that are a direct mirror and reflection of the behavioral patterns of their leaders.

I disagree with your comment of no hope or no vision for the future but that doesn't mean there aren't people who feel similarly to your views. This is a reminder of how divided people are in their opinions over matters we scarcely understand. I appreciate your responding in a separate thread but would ask you leave my replies in their original place, I don't mind you quoting me when jumping around if it provides context. Isn't it lovely that today's wisdom from Hazrat Inayat Khan also references Maya?
Quote
Plato wrote that we live in a shadow world, where we confuse the shadow of ourselves with reality. This is the Nafs, the false ego, which stands in the light before God, causing, so to speak, a spiritual eclipse.... The Nafs turns us from the One to the many, enticing us with the things of this world. Then man attaches himself to one thing after another, which brings, at best, momentary satisfaction. Through his spiritual practices the Sufi learns to chain the Nafs, to perceive that it is only a shadow of reality; and finding the sun of truth within his being, looking upon it, one is no longer aware of the shadow.

Then the Nafs is not destroyed, but harnessed. The whole of man's being is attuned to God and everything within him serves God. This is the work of all on the path of illumination, of whatever school they may be. There is no other obstacle than this false self, and there is no better means of controlling it than by meditation and by practicing the presence of God.

Some people have funnel vision. They only see reality through very distorted and narrow vision. For instance in the case of Trump; He sees reality through only one focus... through business and the growth of business. In this limited vision it is impossible to see that growth is not necessarily positive. In fact some people think that companies are not growing but in fact it is a sociological condition and demand; A short sighted and one dimensional vision of reality. They may be increasing financialy but just not exponentially any longer. Is this a bad condition? No it is not. We must incorporate the view of entropy in a total gestalt of reality. In this expanded picture it is easy to see that the more we have and try to develop; the more there is disorder and chaos.

In this view it is difficult to see that actual growth is no longer helping our nation and the world. In fact it would be better to have stability instead of growth. It would be better in most cases to have less rather than more. More growth economically and in population is in fact adding to the distruction of our planet. We do not need to grow in this way. We need to decrease our population and business that is only destroying our nation and the world. HUMAN DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR HAVE LED TO THE GREATEST SLAUGHTER OF LIFE IN 250 MILLION YEARS. This is an alternate view that seems  a very hard view to understand if we continue to live by the perspective that growth is always good. Which is maya and ignorance about what is actually happening on this planet because of growth.

I will keep your request in mind Eric; I can not expect you to agree with how and why I organize the forum...sorry for that.

All good Brother. Unique insights, I resonate with your sentiment on stability over growth. In the name of growth we are harming our health and the environment. I think trying to control the population is as equally terrifying given the fact that the government has experimented with our biology and is willing to tamper with our DNA in the name of control. I am not sure what to make of it, I know what I can focus on and, I pray that I am guided by Gods Love. Gurunath is ringing in my head again, "self peace for world peace." We may only have a tiny influence in this world but God is aware of every single vibration. Should we overcome Maya we can pray for our social circles and environment too. Interestingly, I have read this description of God and Maya from the Gita tonight,
"The pantheistic doctrine of the Gita is that God is everything. Its verses celebrate the discovery of the Absolute, Spirit beyond creation, as being also the hidden Essence of all manifestation. Nature, with her infinite variety and inexorable laws, is an evolute of the Singular Reality through a cosmic delusion: maya, the "Magical Measurer" that makes the One appear as many embracing their own individuality- forms and intelligences existing in apparent separation from their Creator. Just as a dreamer differentiates his one consciousness into many dream beings in a dream world, So God, the Cosmic Dreamer, has separated His consciousness into all the cosmic manifestations, with souls individualized from His own One Being endowed with the egoity to dream their personalized existences within the Nature-ordained drama of the Universal Dream."
As fast and chaotic as things seem, perhaps all is happening in its proper course. If one turns away the opportunity to wake up from their dream, is this Gods decision?
Well, I'll have to read on to understand... I am more inclined to a simplified solution... To quote a couple,

"Give up trying to visualize God or understand His workings; just take His love and bring it into your life.

~Sheikh Jelaluddin Loras

O Lord, make me an instrument of Thy Peace!

~The Peace Prayer, attributed to St Francis"

The beautiful thing about understanding the dream nature of reality is though we are under the false notion it is real it has the semblance of reality. In a sense that is just as strong - dreams at nite themselves have a reality all
their own even to the extent that we can share them in a pleasurable and meaningful way - for instance dreaming a song and the actually playing it.

Newton’s Law of Motion is a law of maya: “To every action there is always an equal and contrary reaction; the mutual actions of any two bodies are always equal and oppositely directed.” Action and reaction are thus exactly equal. “To have a single force is impossible. There must be, and always is, a pair of forces equal and opposite.”

Fundamental natural activities all betray their mayic origin. Electricity, for example, is a phenomenon of repulsion and attraction; its electrons and protons are electrical opposites. Another example: the atom or final particle of matter is, like the earth itself, a magnet with positive and negative poles. The entire phenomenal world is under the inexorable sway of polarity; no law of physics, chemistry, or any other science is ever found free from inherent opposite or contrasted principles.

Physical science, then, cannot formulate laws outside of maya, the very texture and structure of creation. Nature herself is maya; natural science must perforce deal with her ineluctable quiddity. In her own domain, she is eternal and inexhaustible; future scientists can do no more than probe one aspect after another of her varied infinitude. Science thus remains in a perpetual flux, unable to reach finality; fit indeed to formulate the laws of an already existing and functioning cosmos, but powerless to detect the Law Framer and Sole Operator. The majestic manifestations of gravitation and electricity have become known, but what gravitation and electricity are, no mortal knoweth. 3

To surmount maya was the task assigned to the human race by the millennial prophets. To rise above the duality of creation and perceive the unity of the Creator was conceived of as man’s highest goal. Those who cling to the cosmic illusion must accept its essential law of polarity: flow and ebb, rise and fall, day and night, pleasure and pain, good and evil, birth and death. This cyclic pattern assumes a certain anguishing monotony, after man has gone through a few thousand human births; he begins to cast a hopeful eye beyond the compulsions of maya.

To tear the veil of maya is to pierce the secret of creation. The yogi who thus denudes the universe is the only true monotheist. All others are worshiping heathen images. So long as man remains subject to the dualistic delusions of nature, the Janus-faced Maya is his goddess; he cannot know the one true God.

According to Hindu philosophy and error entertained by one person is called a avidya or illusion while an error that deludes all mankind is called maya or delusion~Paramahansa Yogananda
