Some people have strong sympathy and antipathy for others. You may find them very spiritual until you experience their other side. They have a difficulty controlling their own animosity and emotional attachment. You may find that they would like to control their environment and those in it. Their anger and animosity  can be very dangerous to those that have been close to them in some way.

Well, if so, even though outwardly spiritual, they have a long way to go yet...

Well, if so, even though outwardly spiritual, they have a long way to go yet...

We have seen people like that even here on the forum. I am not sure what to make of it. One thing I have noticed;
Circumstances and other people can bring such behaviors to light. When desire rises to the surface and is thwarted or jealousy sprouts with it often comes antipathy.

It has made sense to me why such people have left my life: I do not feel or experience antipathy towards them. I wonder if you also have this experience mccoy. I attribute it to long years of meditation. I have no enemies. There are times we must fight evil. But I have no enemies.

Over the years I have found myself praying for such people. Leaving people on bad terms or worst yet with little or no explanation is a form of passive aggression and is an expression of antipathy. At the very least it shows a total lack of empathy for the feelings of others. Understanding why people do this relieves us of the hurt they are trying to cause which is a regression in their spiritual and personal evolution.

From speculation, it would seem best to let it be. Letting go is very difficult to do, especially when you've invested time and energy. I've been told I think too much. It seems best not to worry about the other person or their Karma..

That tends to be my attitude as well.

Thanks for the responses. Today has been an interesting day for me filled with memories. Someone texted me that i spent quite a bit of time with over 35 years ago. Also I called a friend that has been trying to reach me for sometime. Another person called, and left a message, that had some of these things happen to them at the same time they are happening to me. In the last year or so quite a few people have weaved in and out of my life from the past... as if to orchestrate a syncronicity of events to gain wisdom from through the generosity of life's abundance and showing a concern and heartfelt feelings for those who have shared their lives with us. So as you can see it is not all about me forgetting someone else and letting it be. I feel it is also about how we handle relationships that come back into our lives (at times out of our control) and those that have that potential. Often, being the recipient of such encounters, while being flooded with past memories we are trying to creatively adjust to a different time and hopefully sometimes dispositions.

For those taking an interest. I have found that sometimes people do not think enough. They do not think out the consequences of their actions but rather react to current conditions and events. It is not by coincidence that people have played an important role in our lives. It is rather unfortunate that people fail to see the significance and meaning of people and circumstances in our lives. Especially when we choose to make a spiritual effort and find liberation. People are often sent by higher forces and we are also brought into their lives for very important reasons. Sometimes we miss the significance of such encounters and instead concentrate on our differences. This is a tragety that happens between people and can separate people unnecessarily for years, decades or the rest of our life this incarnation.

Yet we are often perplexed as to how to respond to people who reenter our lives. Should we bring up issues that separated us in the past? We may wonder if someone else does not seem to recognize or acknowledge their behavior in the past. Also; what about our own? With time we ourselves will undoubtedly see things much differently. It is a revealing experience that we may have had opened to us to see how we have changed and what we have learned over the years. In many ways it it is a gift to see your life in relief with the past and can be a revelation of how to respond to life in the future. It is like an afterthought that we are given second chances which may play out in quite a different way because of the wise old adage; time is the best healer. We may now see things quite differently...Even though others may not have significantly changed.

It's all a flow filled with change, as the title of this thread suggests...  Like the idea, "the opposite of Love is Indifference" and how "love" and "hate" or anger could be so close to each other sometimes (though, a more animalistic "love", as opposed to some transcendent "oneness Love")...

Apparently, this is the way Life on Earth/Nature continues to unfold and progress for Humans...  or one of the ways... the desire for sex is very strong in Humans and all mammals because Nature needed to give incentive to the continuation and evolution of every species that came before us... I don't mean to imply Humans are more important than other animals, but our social activities are unique to us and somewhat less of a mystery than the social dynamics of a wolf pack or bee hive...

Also, we know that change is the only constant in our Universe... if we speak of the Spiritual, we mean what is beyond our Universe or what binds it all in the present moment.  This is Spiritual Love, Oneness, Divinity we all shARE.

The material world is full of chaos and uncertainty, and since our bodies and brains are a part of this wild, hard-to-predict unfoldment of the material Universe, this manifests in some changes we hardly ever see coming or even admit to ourselves when when do sometimes... but which we ultimately learn and grow from.

One of these surprises the Universes can throw at us is in relationships.  People we trusted betraying our trust, or some unconscious impulse causing a surprising change in ourself we are not proud of.  Holding on to memories of when things seemed "perfect" usually isn't ver helpful... however, as a musician/artist, it can be inspiring to try to document the best of times and the struggle of the hard times with music and art.. maybe as a process of alchemy/transmutaion... another way of processing change, growing and learning (and sharing it with others who may relate to it or be helped by the artist's personal story...).

The only way I find to navigate these ever changing waters seems to be being in the moment... letting go of the past, and LOOKING not thinking, at what is before me in the present...

But I still have many animal emotions and desires... Even if I feel total peace and sympathy one day... a week or month from now (possibly after a couple of alcohol drinks) I may feel overwhelmed with a feeling of "how DARE this person have DONE THIS to MEEEE!!!!?!?!?"... or "Poor Meee... Why does it seem all the jerks and selfish people get everyone's love and attention, and my love just gets taken for granted and repayed with coldness and cruelty... Life isn't fair..."

Hopefully meditation, being in the moment, being grateful, healthy physical practices will then get me back to a place of positivity and growth... But I think it is important to acknowledge the relative truth of all of our feelings and thoughts, even (or especially) when they are self-defeating... the world has a lot of chaos in it, so things do not always seem "fair", and our biology is programmed to remind us of this... (i.e. stay away from that part of the jungle... it's not "fair" but those lions will eat you like they did your friend if you go after those bananas...).

We are growing as a Species, Homo Sapiens, to be more kind and have deeper Spiritual values IMO... but this takes time, and we are all only a very small part of the bigger picture of the material world...

Maybe I'm getting a little off topic... but basically, I'm doing better at accepting some forms of change in others, and I believe everyone is doing the best with what they have to work with... So if someone wants to be kind, mean, warm, cold, trustworthy or betraying... this is their path, and our path is to respond in the way we must to protect ourselves and those we love...

I hope everyone has a wonderful Solstice & Christmas!!!! Namaste!  Cheesy Grin Cool

Art and those with a receptive disposition.

I believe that in indifference is a form of antipathy. It is a shutting down of the heart. A contraction of sorts as opposed to expansion. I am happy to see you differentiate between an animal type of love and a more transcendental love which we may experience in meditation or even to an extent in another human being. Although we may find that another human being may not be experiencing this transcendental love we have tuned into. They may even see it as a fantasy of our own imagination.

This animal nature that you describe can be something two people magnetise to for a time. But it often has this quality of attraction and repulsion. It can even originate from a soul recognition of sorts. But then I will say this; I do not see sex for the sake of sex as uplifting from a spiritual view. If the spiritual or transcendental part of it is missing it loses its appeal after having a taste of this higher transcendental love. In relationships there is often the element of physical attraction which is difficult to handle when it is not a reciprocal agreement. In this case it may be better to have a physical distance although both parties could still be friends and communicate from time to time.

We are evolving towards a transcendental love while most of us still feel a strong connection to earth and our physical desires. In this recognition we become more and more a witness of this body and its reactions. As we are an observer to our breath during meditation we also become an observer of our passions and desires in this physical form.

Some people will feed us with nourishment until such time that they have found someone else to replace us. This I would describe as ultimate hedonistic utilitarianism and opportunism. It seems like something we should watch for in ourselves and others. I am much more careful about burning bridges today than I was at one time in my life. Doesn't that seem important? Especially if we are to make friends with our past and when we are indifferent or have enemies we are actually enemies with ourselves and our past.

Sometimes we are just witnesses. Witnesses in this great play. When we see strong sympathy and antipathy playing out we know that it takes just a flip of the coin to reveal the other side. I can understand that someone would like to learn from their own mistakes. At some point we realize that the 'bananas' you mentioned in your last post may be just too good to be true and the same person that fed us sweet fruits will have no problems feeding us rotten bananas tomorrow. There comes a time in everyone's life that we learn about poisoned fruit and how to recognize it and respond to it before we indulge. Hmmmm.

Do some people cultivate unkindness or does it just seem natural for them to be mean?

For me I would say it just gives me pleasure to be obstreperous and what inspires you to be kind ?

as far as "evolving"...

Ramana Maharshi might ask "Who is evolving to what end?"

or

"You are the peace and love you seek"

...
