President Donald Trump ordered the White House’s top lawyer to prevent Attorney General Jeff Sessions from recusing himself from overseeing the Russian election-meddling probe, according to a new report, and exploded in anger when the attempt was unsuccessful.

“Where’s my Roy Cohn?”

Trump was furious when Sessions stepped aside, according to a New York Times report late Thursday, saying he needed his attorney general to protect him, and wondering aloud where was his equivalent of Roy Cohn, who was Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s top aide during the “Red Scare” of the 1950s. Later in life, Cohn was Trump’s personal lawyer and fixer.

The lobbying of Sessions was one of several revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has uncovered, the Times reported, that could build a case that Trump attempted to obstruct the Russia investigation.

Mueller reportedly has also substantiated claims that former FBI Director James Comey made in a series of memos following meetings with Trump before he was fired in May, and has handwritten notes from former chief of staff Reince Priebus describing how Trump pressured Comey to publicly deny he was under investigation.

Trump’s actions so unnerved some in the White House that one lawyer reportedly lied to him in an effort to avoid obstructing justice. “The president’s determination to fire Mr. Comey even led one White House lawyer to take the extraordinary step of misleading Mr. Trump about whether he had the authority to remove him,” the Times reported.

The Times also said it had found evidence that, in the days before Comey was fired, one of Sessions’ aides asked a congressional staff member for information that would smear Comey’s reputation.

Mueller is also reportedly investigating a false statement Trump gave in July in response to revelations about a meeting between his son, Donald Trump Jr., and Russians, which led to a spokesman for the president’s lawyers to quit because he believed the statement showed obstruction of justice.
