Just wondering,  in both the SRF and the Amma meditation techniques, if it is ok to ask this here ..... why do both begin their meditations with exercises ?

Does this have something to do with limbering up so one can sit for long periods of time ? or does it somehow have a connection to relaxing the body, which then somehow helps the mind to focus on the meditation ? Do other meditations from other religions also have exercises as a pre- meditation routine ?

If these questions have already been answered here somewhere, just point me in that direction please.

i think your middle paragragh answered your questions. i do not remember having physical routines in the Buddhist tradition. Hoever Buddhists do exercise. Not having a physical routine will only lead to one thing: Moaning and groaning about body aches and not being able to meditate when you get older because of physical conditions. Laziness in a physical routine only brings physical suffering.

so I answered my own questions, thanks for pointing that out. Yes, the Buddhist meditation came to mind - exercise is good just for general good health, the meditation benefits are extra bonus. The only moaning and groaning I am hearing is in my imagination, because when the exercise is done, it is such fun, I can't wait til the next session !  Grin

Most people are so lazy, they don't even exercise good judgement.

The SRF energization exercises help get the 'knots' out of the body so the body is more relaxed and prepared for meditation. The Hong Sau technique is like a lazer to focus the mind. The om technique obsorbs the consciousness. These basic meditation techniques are offered in the first 30 SRF lessons. You can get them in the mail and you do not even have to go to church if you don't care to. They are available at: www.yogananda.org

Thanks Steve, the exercise now makes sense. Good basic explanations of the other techniques. I have to smile at your reply of " the meditation techniques are offered in the first 30 lessons ", always something just around the corner, not quite in sight.

Here's a generic reply... likely hold true with many, many paths...

asana = meditation postures

many key asana will say spine comfortably erect / straight... so this may be first challenge for many,...  so exercise good to help this...

consider, if your goal is to transcend the body, and clear the mind of all those pesky daily worries and pesky random running thoughts...   well, if your sitting there and your body keeps aching or such... well, how can you focus beyond it...   so exercises help with this...

consider, exercise is likely both physical and other subtle energy flows...

My idea about the need of exercises (through experience), is that the exercises expand your consciousness, as the purpose is to evolve to cosmic consciousness.
The exercises are a kind of safety, a protection. If you are not ready and you experience some higher level you can have serious mental problems. The small ego goes in panic because it cannot handle the experience. It is because the higher you go the more energy is evolved. If you cross a frontier in yourself a lot of energy comes free and if you are not ready to lead this in the right channels you can have for example fearattackts or simular.

You cannot jump to the top of the stair, you have to go step by step. Therefore there are the exercises before you really can meditate. We wake up little by little.

Thank you namaste and White Eagle for your replies. I guess there is more to the idea of exercise and meditation than I originally thought.

Nice to see you posting White Eagle. I hope to see more posts from you.  Smiley

I thought this was a good question and I answered in  posts on this subject. However r what I have found fascinating about Meditation is that it is a dimension of timelessness after u get the hang of it. Furthermore I have found that this timeless feeling permeates activities after meditation so it is much easier to go slower on for instance the energizing exercises provided in the SRF lessons. To actually be and experience each moment of them. In this sense it is helpful to often do Spiritual exercises after Meditation.
