I am reading this for my study tonight and wonder, is Amma a deva? After reading your post on transcending duality I have learned of a Hindu word... Variagya which means reuninciation from the pains and pleasures of our Material world... Yet it means more...
Scott,
there's a special, delicate touch to your expression here and i am feeling the words you wrote. beautiful
peace my friend

Steve,
this story of boon boon is quite compelling... upon reading from hazarat inayat khan, he speaks of indifference- not in the sense you or i know it...
Quote
The Hindus call it Vairagya from which the term Vairagi has come. Vairagi means a person who has become indifferent; and yet indifference is not the word for it. It describes a person who has lost the value in his eyes of all that attracts the human being. It is no more attractive to him; it no more enslaves him. He may still be interested in all things of this life, but is not bound to them.

Perhaps Amma is this angelic-man described by Inayat Khan... I will elaborate in a separate post.

Quote
When the Vairagi is still more developed in this feeling of Vairagya, then he becomes a lion. He is no more the serpent seeking solitude, although he loves it still; he is no more the deer running away from the crowd. He is the lion, who stands and faces all difficulties. No longer sensitive, but with all strength and power, with all balance, with patience, he endures, and with a brave spirit he stands in the crowd in the world. For what? To bear all things that come to him; to endure all the jarring influences that the world offers to a sensitive person; to look into the eyes of all, being brave in spirit and strengthened in truth and clear of conscience.

It is in this way that the lion-like soul of the Deva, the angel-man, comes to the rescue of humanity. What is called the Master or Saint or Prophet or Sage is this developed Vairagi. He is like the fruit that has ripened on the tree, helped by the sun. In this way, this soul that is ripened by experience in life, and has not allowed itself to become decayed by that experience, but has upheld the truth with balance, with hope and patience, directed by love for humanity and desire to serve God, without any desire for appreciation or return from below or from above. It is this soul of the Deva that brings the divine Message, whenever the Message comes, to a community, a nation, or to the world.

The full lesson can be read here:

Which describes the three stages of the Variyagi.

I wonder if it takes more than one life attain this realization, or is it possible we too can achieve this form of liberation and closeness to our inner Deva

Hello Eric had to look up your word:

Deva
Indo-European, Sanskrit word for God, originally thought of as feminine. The modern word Goddess has changed connotations to represent a lesser form of divinity. Deva had the meaning we typically think of as the word God today, however God was thought to be the Great Mother.

In Buddhism Deva's are highly evolved beings who inhabit different levels of existence. Deva's are commonly associated with great beauty and bliss.

Modern New Age versions of Deva's are thought of similarly to angels, nature spirits, or fairies.

Pronounced Day-va.

I would definitely call Amma a deva. I also think she is a true guru who has the ability to guide her disciples to enlightenment and she has given them the tool of the iam technique of meditation and many other helpful tecchniques to spiritualize consciousness and free us from delusion. Her unique path lies in the idea that no one has to change their religion to join her only practice their own religion. While Amma is widely regarded as one of India’s foremost spiritual leaders, Amma says that her religion is love. She has never asked anyone to change their religion but only to contemplate the essential principles of their own faith and to try to live accordingly.

What interests me that is different about Amma from many other Masters is that she did not follow a living Guru when she was a youth. She did sing songs to Krishna though. The value I learned from this is that more and more inspiration comes from within as we meditate more. Less and less is needed from the outside. Although for those of us struggling for enlightenment it is still necessary to have the influence of enlightened souls to keep us following the path that leads there. It appears that Amma has reached a state far beyond any worldly desires that would pull her back.
