Meditation and Memories

I cannot make a scientific comparison here but I must tell you I think there is a relationship between meditation and memories. I am trying to understand it. I often am flooded with memories and pictures of the past in my minds eye and I am trying to make sense of them and their significance to what is happening in my life now.
