The sound to step upon on your way to heaven

« on: Sep 23, 2009 11:30 pm »

I deem this book, together with “The Second Coming of Christ” the most valuable books in the world. Since these books are so valuable, I want to read in them as long as possible. On the other hand I find so many important things on each page that I need plenty of time to digest and to balance my reading with outer world experiences.

Since I am interested in learning languages and plan to visit India in 2012, I use my study of the Gita as incentive to learn to read devanagari and a little sanscrit.

I once received a Gita commentary from Swami Prabhupada, when I was at San Francisco airport 20 years ago that I never had much interest to look into. But that book contains the original Sanscrit version of the Gita with word to word translation. So I read each vers in Sanscrit and try to translate it with the help given. Today I can read it quite fluently, but my knowledge of sancrit hardly has improved.

So each day I read only one new page of “God talks with Arjuna” and I repeat the lecture of the page from the day before. Since I realized that the first Chapter of God talks with Arjuna is very important for my meditation practice, I revised it twice in the same way and made an excerpt of it with the second revision.

Since I started to read in “The Second Coming of Christ”, were I read two new pages together with the revision of the pages of the day before, I stopped revising “God talks with Arjuna."

I do this reading right after my morning meditation and don’t take anything in until I am through with this routine.

If I am very quick (that is "very hungry" or there is some other incentive) I can do the reading in three quarters of an hour. Generally it takes from an hour to one and a half an hour. But it can also take two hours.

Since I started reading these books, I left out my reading only for one day and that was a day, where I didn’t take anything in.

With “God Talks with Arjuna” I have reach page 448 today.

How do you do your reading of "God talks with Arjuna"?

He is a superior being, though he remain unheeded and unknown, who follows the simple virtues of life and the path of calm meditation that slowly but steadily unveil the soul, compared to one who pursues well-performed spectacular worldly duties catering to the senses, or who ... GtwA 404

i started reading the pages you are reading. i went on to page 449 On 448 i read: ..whenever a devotee finds himself in delusion owing to sense identification, the Spirit manifests Itself in him trying to foster his longing for soul bliss.
In a sense the more we meditate and think of God the more we 'foster' this spirit.

i also like this passage on the next page: Thus, as often as man's body-identified or depraved nature (adharma) manifests, owing to effects of the misuse of free choice, so often does the soul's real nature (dharma) emerge through spiritual effort, stimulated by the inward manifestations of the ever awake, ever kind spirit.

i like the sanskrit words (is that what they are?). i do not know why but i feel a closeness to that language. A little bit of the Gita a day helps are mind and spirit in the right ways. Thanks kashiraja

'Materialists are so attached to the enjoyment of sense objects that they live their lives full of fear, fear lest they lose the gross pleasures of health or physical comforts; and they they are consumed by anger when it does happen. But the wise, recognizing the body as a brittle basket of pleasure, do not put into it the eggs of their happiness, knowing the consequence will be a scrambled pile of humpty-dumpties.'

om lukah samastha sukhinu bhavantu

kashiraja i have a few questions for you:

1. Where does the language devanagari originate?

2. What languages do you have knowledge of?

3. You told me that you are thinking about starting a German site; It appears you live in Germany. Did you also live in India?

4. What does kashiraja mean and how do you prononce it?

5. It might interest you to know that Into Blue has an interest in other languages including German. i am trying to understand more of India's languages and some spanish.

Thanks om namah shivaya

i am a new reader of this book and usually i am able to read at night prior to meditation. this morning i read upon wake and i find it a much more fitting activity than others. a little bit of stretching, reading then meditation. i don't want to rush this book, i haven't jumped around much either. i read a few pages and find relation to my experience... some nights i go back and reread the same passage. often i start a few pages before my bookmark. i have a feeling i may be jumping around though, part excitement part reference and instruction. i am extremely interested and am actively pursuing the guidance therein for liberation.

Hi Steve!

My friend who introduced me to Gurunath suggested it. I have two friends who I study scripture with... My readings mainly come from wahiddudins website, wherein he offers the teachings of western Sufism by Inayat Khan. My other friend offers wisdom from the lightning standing still and gifted me AoY and my other friend reads from the Bible, a version where Jesus is called Yahushua. We like to get together and share, the bhagavad gita was suggested for us all to study together. Soul is the source of inspiartion, speaking so clearly to this little one! The essence of the Gita, the song of the spirit, is fitting for my current perspective of things.

On a separate note, Gurunath teaches the importance of Kriya Yoga and is a direct disciple of Babaji. From him I first learned the importance of 12 years of healthy living for subtle spiritual progress, which also comes from Yogananda and the Gita.

I feel the need to push forward but I keep wanting to go back to verse 1 and read it over and over... I've spent now a few days in verses 1-3. Between this and my daily wisdom from Inayat Khan and developing good habit of meditation, I am feeling aligned.

As hinted in AoY and GTWA, it is not necessary or recommended to read the entirety of this text as quickly as possible nor for intellectual debate but to apply faith and practice with the reading. My new practice is to read 2-3 pages in the morning, meditate and then reread those same pages to carry the wisdom with me through out the day. So far I have found every page to offer something I can learn from or relate to.
