Often while meditating I observe thoughts in the foreground and thoughts in the background. That is some thoughts are conscious but others seem to be taking place with out our even being conscious of them unless we become aware of them by noticing what is happening in the now while we are doing our practice. Looking outward we become aware that our body often tenses up in certain places on its own while we are making attempts to be still. Looking inward at our practice we observe how well we are able to focus on our practice and what happens during spaces in the practice as well as during the practice itself. As an example we notice our visualization being focused during Kriya or not focused and whether that focus is strained or relaxed. Or while practicing a mantra we observe what happens when the breath is out or when it is in; that is the spaces between respiration. When we begin meditating we observe our attitudes towards it. When we are done we take note of thoughts that transpire and if inspiration arises in any noticeable way. During the day we constantly take note of what thoughts and feelings arise in consciousness.

We can also observe our consciousness before retiring and guide our thoughts to uplifting heights. Upon awakening we can observe the dreams we may have had and what thoughts arise after a rest. We also can watch our attitude is before exercising. Are we receptive or resistant? Slow to take action or hesitant and entertaining ideas of why we do not want to discipline ourselves. While eating we can take note if we are doing so with mindfulness or if we are just greedily devouring food. We can take note of if we are thankful for the food or if we are ungrateful. While being with friends and strangers we can notice how they affect us and how we respond to them. Also whether we are grateful and attentive to what they are saying or absentminded and unappreciative.

Added to these observations below I have also noticed something about observation itself. Although observation and introspection seem extremely important factors in concentration and awareness the experience of meditation itself appears to me to be beyond the mental faculties that are required for meditation to take place. When meditation takes place the experiences with it are transcendental and beyond the mind that functions up to that point. It’s like any other creative process. For instance music. You can have all the mechanics of playing expertly functioning but until you get in that sweet spot where something memorable and inspirational takes place you are still involved with the tools. Remarkably as soon as the observing steps in-after experiencing transcendence- more frequently then not, the bliss that accompanies moments of meditation steps out. I believe that is is because higher states of consciousness are beyond the ego and its need to identify with these moments of awakening.
