Sacred chant. Chanting relieves stress. It is simple and repetition. A mystical sound vibration encased in a sylable. They have this power within them that is hypnotic and nice. You get hypnotized on some level that makes you feel so good you do not want to stop.

I have witnessed miracles practicing mantras on a highway in Michigan I was chanting a mantra for long hours. Three dear entered the highway. I pushed for the brakes. They would not work. As two more deer passed in front of me I swirved to the meridian and avoided all three. If the brakes had worked I would have hit one of the second two since I was driving about 70 miles per hour. Then after leaving the scene I noticed the brakes worked again.

Thank you Steve. Smiley

Mantra in English means some phrase thats repeated again and again. Actually, mantra is a Sanskrit word originally. It meant a sacred chant, to...This is maha mantra..maha means great. As in great mantra. These Eternal sounds of love release the hearer from all contemporary barriers of time and space.

A mantra can be used all day long so we do not deplete our mental resources and when we sit down we will be more focused and our mind will not be on past memories and future difficulties.

Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages and is the heritage for the universal man. Mantra-yoga is a blessing. Often when Swami or guru's invoke powerful mantras I feel a chilling effect upon my spine. Thanks for directing me to this earlier today and calming me down from the junk food propaganda.

Eric I know you have had more success with the mantra recently and so it has influenced my consciousness to return to the practice... I spend most my efforts at Kriya, practicing the presence and various Energization/Yoga postures.

However I definitely have seen the results of mantra practice in my life. One life experience of its benefits can keep you interested in its practice a whole lifetime. Simply because of this; you recognize that if you can have that experience of timelessness once in your life it very possibly could happen again. If I have some lite meditation music or new age type music going it keeps my mind more locked into a mantra. I was able to more or less focus on a mantra for about an hour tonite. Sometimes we are blessed with some come-ons in our practice and I remember to this day how I was at about the age of 24.

I was at a SRF convocation and meditating in a large room that was dedicated to just complete silence and meditation. I sat for quite awhile practicing a mantra. I believe it was part of the effort of coming to the event, paying for it, being in the presence of highly evolved souls, past life karma and the combined effort in the room that suddenly brought me into the breathless state. I suppose that one event stimulates my efforts again. Because at that moment of breathlessness I experienced a state of bliss I had never encountered in my life until that moment and recognized the freedom of not having to depend on your breath for survival.

I should add though that for the most part even when I successfully focus on mantra, I am usually dealing with the labyrinth of my own mind. A constant reminder to let go of an endless train of thoughts and ideas that enter the horizon of the minds focus.

that's a beautiful experience steve.

i'm not sure how to make the accents but the mantra taught to us by swami translted in english spelling is,
sriramanama-bijja-mantra-vinyasah (with accents in their proper placement).

he relayed to us the difference between mantra and mantra vinyasah which is a type of kriya.

last night i woke up with anger. i had to walk myself again through yoganandas words, reminding myself that anger is from thwarted desire. in my prayer to god, i realized i was showing a disrespect or, a lack of faith. i believe in god. he has even answered my plea recently. gods will is greater than my own. a part of my spiritual practice is in altering my perspective. god is in all, to direct anger to any one is the same as sharing that anger with god. i asked the lord to help me disconnect from this identification. to send those in my mind who aroused my anger love instead. the spiritual practice is a daily reminder that, "thy will be done." a great faith in the one i believe in, that all is as he wills it. should my lesser desires be unsatisfied, i believe god has plans for me this ego can not readily or always interpret.

anyways. he wants us to practice this mantra for 1 month. 27 times on the point of time, space and energy and 12 times bottom up through the cakra disc in the spinal column.

it was around 1:30AM i decided to enter meditation in the dark, the quiet house and the level of stillness left me feeling very connected. i whispered the mantra and felt the most sensations i have in a while- literally the seed energy was releasing something in each point and this could be felt. there is a level of sincerity and stillness, erect posture.. but... wow, it was that sensation of the chills running along the spine, the tingling atop the forehead and even an entering in the front side of my body.
swami has explained that these sensations in the back are the cakra disc releasing energy, the beginning parts of each mantra is what breaks it down and then we put in the ramaya namah as a type of medicine. he said for those who have mastered the mantra, that if you put your ear along their body, you can hear the cakra disc emanating the mantra sounds.

yesterday before all this i practiced in the yard, and, i decided to include ammas chant lokah samasta this one... it also provided a great release and allowed me to feel a direct channel of energy between earth and sky. i tried to project this one to the world and my surroundings.

I see you have and are using different spiritual techniques as I have myself. Sometimes i’m more receptive or prefer one technique over the other for various reasons, which also include my friends use of them. Changing are perspectives as you mentioned above happens to be an extremely important element of spiritual awakening because the realization of where we cause our own blocks in awareness can alter our whole outlook on our environment and the people in it. In fact sometimes it is like a revelation that enlightens us to a knew view of ourselves. The mantra is the most basic of all meditation techniques. It trains our mind to practice ‘higher’ techniques with more awareness so we are able to benefit from them by increased awareness.

Today I found my journal with Lord Rama's mantra. I practiced. Swami challenges us to practice it for 1 month... Afterwards I chanted the mantra Amma the hugging saint taught Steve who in turn shared with me... =)

This is the mantra gifted by the Lord of Ayurveda, see attached.

I do wish I could hear Swami chant these again, as I am uncertain on pronunciation- Acutaya namah. I can't remember if Acutaya is a hard or soft T, pronounced Ah-cue-thigha if soft.
