You could take a simple word like 'shanti' and use it as a mantra. While breathing in  you mentally chant 'shan' and while breathing out you would mentally chant 'ti'. Don't think about it. Bring your awareness back to the breath. Be aware of the pauses in between the inhalation and exhaltion. Don't force them to be longer just observe. Yogis spent hours a day just watching the mind and bringing it back to the breath. You will see that the breath eventually slows down and you will start feeling peace.

Remember if you feel restless and as though you can't stay still: You have created the habit of restlessness and body consciousness. Now you must create new habits to have a spiritual life. Have patience with yourself. In the process you will also learn to have patience with others.

SHANTI (Peace)

Thank you for this post, I was wondering how to connect mantras and breathing. Makes total sense about creating new habits for a more spiritual life, and the patience part too, nice reminder.

Shanti

I used to chant kali with incoming breath and kali again with outgoing breath.

Awareness of the breath seems to be one of the most important elements of meditation. Both the energization exercises and the 20-20-20 breathing execises bring awareness to the breath. Similarly; the beginning exercises in the i am technique bring the awareness to the breath.

The moments breathing in and out as well as the spaces between breaths are points of attention.
