Abhaya is a Sanskrit word meaning “fearlessness.” In both Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, the concept of fearlessness is represented by the abhaya mudra and indicates spiritual power of the yogi that is gesturing the mudra. The Bhagavad Gita emphasizes fearlessness as one of the fundamental spiritual virtues.

Within yoga practice and philosophy, yogis aspire to develop the inner self and transcend worldly desires, hindrances or obstacles by harnessing spiritual fearlessness and strength.

In a spiritual yoga practice, yogis seek to develop abhaya through Self-realization and connection with the Divine. Many depictions of Hindu deities display the abhaya mudra as an offering of protection and peace to devotees.

Cultivating abhaya through the practice of yoga allows for liberation and spiritual maturity; whether that is through testing personal limits in challenging asanas, developing oneself through devoted meditation, or practicing discipline through concentrated pranayama. Without fear, yogis are able to set aside hindrances to living in harmony with others and overcome difficulties.
