 Lesson #47

People in ugly moods should be left alone and given an opportunity to seclude themselves when they are thus spiritually and mentally sick. This "quarantine" will prevent them from spreading an epidemic of inharmony.~ Paramahansa Yogananda

Many times i have left people when I found their moods very dark. It is really the best thing to do because you may be drawn into their darkness and react in ways that you never intended.

#47 In this lesson the Master also says it is best to get away from people who nag us so they do not get the "satisfaction of crushing us with unkindness."

Lesson #46

In this lesson 'Paramahansaji' speaks about magnetism and the properties inherent in magnetic fields. Magnetic fields have  dualistic properties. For instance; have you ever noticed having a strong attraction to something followed by a strong antipathy? Perhaps you have noticed the reactions of others towards you. They may have felt attracted to you and then suddenly you begin to see a reversal and they are repelled or vica versa. What amazes me is that many times people are not aware of this phenomena. If they are they still let these reactions control themselves. They are very affected by these dual states.
We attract living objects that have a relation to us... to our magnetic field.

He also speaks of increasing magnetism. Though i am a vegetarian i must admit that at times i eat a lot of protein and starches. He states that 'to much protein and starchy food retain the poisons in you body and that fresh fruit and vegetables increase magnetism. "People who eat meat three times a day have dull eyes, whereas those who eat plenty of fruit invariably have bright eyes.

I have been eating much more fruit lately and trying to start limiting my protein/starch diet. I remember Yogananda talking about his stay in the monastery with Sri Yukteswar and being fed .. simple fruit meals. All this starch food turns to sugar. No wonder so many people get heavy here in the states. We are always told we need protein and the wheat fields and potatoes are abundant here. All to make us look like porky and his friends!

Lesson 46 and 47 about magnetism have been  on my mind for sometime now. We all emit a certain vibration and we attract spiritual, mental and material people and circumstances as a result. Then as we attract we often simultaneously feel the dual characteristics of repulsion and attraction to what we have attracted. We can attract many spiritual circumstances but unless we are advanced yogis we may find that we may have neglected some of our material needs. If we have the power to attract material things we may find a deep emptiness because our spiritual needs are not being met. We also need our mental and artistic needs satisfied otherwise we get bored with the people and circumstances surrounding us. It is a very interesting balancing act. Until we find permanent happiness welling up within from the deep practice of meditation we constantly have to recognize the needs of those around us and ourselves. These needs quickly become desires when we place too much emphasis on them.

We also find that there are people with much more and much less strengths of magnetism around us. Sometimes that magnetism is helpful to them and sometimes it is not. For instance; Someone may be a
unrecognized artist, psychic or spiritual person but another person may have a lot of popularity but that popularity is very destructive to their spiritual life and becomes a notoriety for them. It is also possible to have spirituality but not to have material balance.

"All things in this material universe manifest the dual force of attraction and repulsion. They have their affinities and they have their antipathies." ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

What a statement. What is amazing to me are  the reactions we see in other people to us. Also our reaction or feelings towards them. Often these reactions whether they be inner or outer can lead to quite a feeling of ambivalence within ourselves and others. One must watch our passions and repulsion to those around us to make sure we do not react in a way that is distructive to a relationship that otherwise could be quite positive.

Sometimes we just have to take a temporary break from some people we come in contact with to preserve the harmony of the relationship. At other times we may loose the opportunities presented to us because some of us are unable to contend with the ambivalence we feel. I have read and observed that this state can lead to avoidance or procrastination, or to deliberate attempts to resolve the ambivalence. People experience the greatest discomfort from their mixed feelings  at the time when the situation requires a decision to be made. The situation has the possibility of turning into animosity for some people. All this can be controlled if we maintain a witnessing consciousness and work on our own inner feelings by sublimation and acknowledgment and sensitivity to the feelings of those around us.

Lesson#47

Very few people realize that most of our happiness lies in the art of understanding the law of human behavior. That is why so many people are often "in hot water" with their friends, and, worse yet, at constant war with their own best beloved ones at home. They do not understand otheres' behavior and do not see the faults in their own. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

What has amazed me through the years is how people will be believe what they want about you. They may ask a simple question and you give a simple answer that does not suit them but they may never ask you why you answered that way. They may even then extrapolate that you some how did harm to them because you will not agree with and have answers that are satisfactory to them. They may even go so far as never wanting to talk to you again. Sometimes i have observed how very wrong people can be in the conclusions about others. A case in point is the story of Jesus. But we must recognize that everyone turned on him even his spiritual followers. We as spiritual aspirants do not always see clearly about others and we also draw the wrong conclusions.

Lesson #50 "When you meditate your body becomes filled with electricity or life energy that is ever present in the ether. Most people do not realize that. Meditation is the turning on of the inner switch that fills the body with divine current. That is why it is so important to keep your concentration on the aftereffects of meditation every minute of one's existence. Do not neutralize that peace with disturbing thoughts." ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

#49 I believe i will be reading several times. It has specific techniques on how to increase memory. These are physical and mental techniques. However lesson #48 and #49 are both about memory development. Two of the techniques are from the energization lessons but can be practiced longer and before retiring and going asleep. The Master also includes some things that hinder memory and the misuse of memory. Wow! Did you know that the you can develop memory by avoiding the regular use of caffeine, theine, and nicotine. They are in coffee, tea and tobacco respectively. No doubt it would be helpful to use the decaffeinated variety.

This Lesson is literally packed with techniques to increase memory. There are even memory drinks.

Hey I really enjoyed the statement by Paramahansa Yogananda in lesson number 50; Attachment is a sort of blind feeling that tortures the soul and does not accomplish anything. Attachment is not love it makes one miserable for his own loss. Real Love is happy only in the happiness of the Beloved. You say that you love your friend, a wonderful friend you enjoy his company; you love to serve him and then he leaves you. If when he has gone you forget him you are heartless but if you just make yourself miserable day and night thinking of your own loss and what occurred through the death of your friend, you are foolish. That attachment will do neither you nor your friend any good at all. Rather you should comfort yourself with the thought every with the knowledge that someday you'll understand where he has gone. Wish him every happiness. Wish him spirituality and upliftment and realize that he has gone somewhere for his own betterment. Whatever is the will of God and whatever is best for him that is your wish.
