Lesson 71

Paramahansa Yogananda speaks of transmuting the creative energy into spiritual energy. i have gone thru various times in my life where i have been celibate but the mind has a tricky way of leading us back into the forces that keep this creation and maya going. i certainly am not going to tell you that i have control of all my biological functions including sex. But i have been taking various routes to control these desires since i have found that they have led to a lot of energy in the satisfaction of such desire and perhaps a lot of dissipated energy that could have been used more constructively. This energy can also create strong attachment to people that may not be good for us in one way or another.

What i have found is that it is very difficult to control such desires when we keep our attention constantly at the satisfaction of these desires and the people who can satisfy them. It seems to me that it is not such a good thing to be in the constant company of something or someone that you are attracted to that is not attracted to you in a physical sense. Perhaps you can still be friends but physical proximity becomes very difficult in these situations. If someone finds someone that is attracted to them in the same way then both of them can share love thru this attraction but it still can be very tricky. This is because sex is not an end in itself but rather a means to an end. That end being love. There is always something compulsive about sex without love and i do not admire actors, celebrities, musicians etc. who have a real active sexual life. i believe they are living so much on the physical plain that they are able to experience little if anything of a spiritual nature.

Paramahansa Yogananda said this: "Until man frees himself from the compulsions of this sex force he cannot liberate his soul from the revolving wheel of reincarnation and plunge it into its Infinite Life." He gives various exercises in this lesson to help transmute the sex energy when it overcomes us.

i must say that i personally think that sex has taught me much about people and has helped me be much more understanding of this biological force and how it affects human relationships. In that sense i see it as a learning experience. Because the manifestation of attraction and sexual desire leads one to consider the causes and brings people closer which they may not have been otherwise. The challenge from a spiritual point of view is to get beyond the sensory experience. Constant attention to this instinct makes us restless and it is very hard to withdraw the life force into the spiritual spine and from sensory perception to have spiritual experience. Many of us are trying to find a balance while slowly overcoming all of our physical attachments and desires that bind us to this earth plain.

Kriya techniques I think for me can help transmute this energy, after all, it starts in the lowest chakra, move the energy up to the third eye, then use it for your own purpose or transmit to help others. The feeling can sometimes be as good, and cleaner really, since it is not dissipated the wrong way. There are other techniques as well, but takes practice just like anything else.
