i think one of the main reasons we call it practicing the presence is this: We as yet do not experience that presence all the time. Yet we have basic change in attitude to our experiences. We start to think of our experiences as coming from God not created by ourselves. More and more we put ourselves out of the way. So God can manifest in our life.  Eventually grace shines thru little dark clouds of our life. We experience Gods presence in our lives and not just practice it. But slow by slow it comes with practice. We fill our thoughts with different vibrations by practicing the presence. You get to know people and ourselves by their/our thoughts. Their thoughts manifest into reality. We want to be around the highest thoughts that manifest God's presence in our lives.

Keeping the thoughts positive and in a high vibrational state is so important and so challenging now.  I find it is not only the outer life but also the inner life and thoughts (which to me is more important) where it necessary to keep positive and try to maintain a positive attitude. I find introspection vital.  I find looking within and analyzing and making adjustments and continuing to move forward is challenging and not easy however necessary to keep moving toward God.  There are good, positive resources available in the form of books and such and also in other people.  Recognizing and utilizing the resources that come to us is vital.  Recently when I started going into worry and negativity a good friend reminded me to 'forget the past, the old will fall on its own; look to and build the future.

Steve, every now and then I think about your statement  "Practicing the presence " and how to make it more a part of everyday life. I think you said it nicely, when you said it is about experiencing God's presence in our life. There are so many ways to experience God in our life, starting out by thanking God for the blessings that we have, a good way to start the day.

Interesting comment about the thoughts of people around us and how their/ our thoughts manifest into reality.

I came across this comment by Eckhart Tolle
"All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present (moment). Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry - all forms of fear - are caused by too much future and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness and all forms of non forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence".

So it sounds like the way for more postivity to enter ones life is not to spend too much time dwelling on the past and the future ..... is this kind of what you mean by practicing the presence, the focusing on the present, kind of like ~ live for the moment ? of course, with God in our lives.

hi Joy,

Have you read any of Wayne Dyer's books ? He has several  books that I have read and I would recommend reading him as an Author. Here are a few of his books : Power of Intention, There is a Spiritual Solution to every Problem, 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace. I have his Power of Intention on a perpetual calendar. It has a saying for every day of the year, motivational moments so to speak.

Hi Into Blue,
I've not read anything by Wayne Dyer.  I saw a PBS special with him, which was good.  I will check out his books.
Thanks!

Hey Into Blue Yes this is 'kinda what I mean by practicing the presence'  Wink these r interesting checks and balances (errors due to omission) shown upside down (instead of practicing in the present finding out y we we do not.) In this way we can see how much we r practicing the presence. Good reminders by Eckhart Tolle and Into Blue! Instead of thinking about God in the present u have showed us why we don't...Because we find ourselves spending so much time thinking about the past and future. The mind is always going anyhow so why not think about God while this is happening?

Practicing the presence is also doing something for someone else. When we do this there is not as much resentment, regret and sadness. We just keep on being loving in the present. We can also have an interview with God. Bring more questions to God and being sincere with him.

i heard a story at service about a monk who used to go to baseball games and a lot of kids would b there early to get jobs selling refreshments. They only needed so many kids to do it so a man would choose certain kids. He did not get chosen. It took sometime to b noticed. After a while the man noticed he was there a lot and started choosing him. If we warm a pew enough divine mother will finally say who is this person who keeps coming back?

It is also important to think of God when u r not free to do so. Like when u r challenged by a lot of work. In these cases he loves us more. i have found myself loving a person(s) during heavy duties. When u love someone u think of them all the time. Perhaps God gives us people to love to show us that if we can think about them when they forget about us; Maybe we can think about God..... who does not forget about us.

It's hard to know what one means by "thinking of God".

I'm not sure how to be more clear than that. Undecided

Nomaste Perhaps this thread will support our discussion.Lately I have been buzzing with the presence of God. I believe it is because I feel grateful for what the Guru has done in my life. However it is also out of recognition of how easily maya can snag you and present a new set of issues in your life. Today I have big plans for thinking of God. I need to interview him again.  Grin

It's hard to know what one means by "thinking of God". A good practice is japa, with calmness. Remaining calm and even minded is what I find to be most important. In the past I have tried to practice positive thinking without even mindedness. I found that it throws you off center. It makes you bipolar, so to speak. So, now I realize we must do the positive thing and think the positive thought, but with non-attachment and calmness. We think the positive thought but do not grasp at it. We do not give energy to negative thoughts, but we do not have aversion toward them either (because aversion gives them energy). Remaining centered, I find, is the most important thing and it can be done.
