i looked up the word compassion and found this definition:

a deep awareness of and sympathy for another's suffering
the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it

i have found that because of the life style others have choosen it eliminates possibilities of growth in their lives because they are able to get only so close to others. It is as though we are reaching out to each other but the very tree we have planted below us can only reach out so much in one direction and than it has it boundaries. Can we choose to grow another tree or do we stay in the tree we have grown for our life?

'The humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it.'  i find that people that are my friends do not know they have chosen untenable life situations that are not conducive to expansive spiritual development or rather they refuse to admit that this has happened in their life and defend their inability to get closer or rather enforce their lifestyle on me by wanting to live a secret life which i have no desire to do. This can also take the subtle form of placing me in a secondary position to the lifestyle that they have chosen. This is O.K. but shouldn't they at least recognize that what's good for the goose is good for the gander? When i point this out they retreat into their own shell of indifference to my explanations or find me at fault for trying to make a point.

So what is my lesson from this? It seems simple to me that i cannot get any closer to such individuals and have to protect myself from their exclusive lifestyles. There lifestyles can only let me in so far. i do not begrudge this but rather understand the boundaries they have set. Does this show a lack of compassion or rather an understanding of the situation at hand?

seriously now, seems to be two themes here ?

first  - lifestyles of others and how their choice of lifestyle is limiting their growth, spiritually speaking ? their lifestyle too worldly and not compatible with spiritual lifestyle ?

second - your feelings of being second place to others, because of lifestyles they have chosen -whether secret or not, it is your feeling left out that is the focus ?

correct any misconceptions, misunderstanding on my part, of what you have posted

i think we are trying to understand what the word compassion means. Not what my feelings are or if someone has choosen a life style that is incompatible with spiritual growth. i think we will find that people have quite a different view of this word compassion. For instance let us take Into Blue's version:

I will send Little Hoot a beautiful condolences card, expressing my deepest sympathy, love and best wishes ! I am sure she will understand.

and as for the Midnite Astrologer, have you no compassion for me and my wishes ?  Cry

Now let us look at Blue Nova's  response to the word:

mmmmmmmmmmm....compassion..i love compassion....

compassion....soul is companion....yes Huh?Huh?

Lastly, let me include Namaste2All's version in the sense that he is speaking about Divine Mother who is an embodiment of compassion.

"When the Golden Lotus Temple went, I at first thought it was a terrible catastrophe; but it turned out otherwise, because it made me go on to found other temples and ashram centers."

"Gloom is but the shade of Divine Mother's hand outstretched caressingly.  Don't forget that.  Sometimes, when the Mother is going to caress you, a shadow is caused by Her hand before it touches you.  So when trouble comes, don't think that She is punishing you; Her hand overshadowing you holds some blessing as it reaches out to bring you nearer to Her."

-- Paramahansa Yogananda
from book "Journey to Self-Realization"  -- "Preparing for Your Next Incarnation"  SRF San Diego Temple, June 11, 1944.

There is a  certain theme that runs through these posts and they are in some way  describing:

i looked up the word compassion and found this definition:

a deep awareness of and sympathy for another's suffering
the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it

So you see i think there is only one theme that is compassion. However we as humans all have our own views on the subject. How can we have compassion for the views of others unless we try to understand them? In this sense i was opening up so that others might understand me. Yet the views of others are just as important and so i am trying to understand their views.

Apologies, seemed I missed the point - definition of compassion. Did not mean to travel into personal territory.

compassion is a wonderful thing...
how so- can we feel for others?

...because we have been through it ourselves. in one sense or another, we've experienced- compassion.

..."a deep awareness of and sympathy for another's suffering "

how about- a deep awareness of and sympathy towards suffering?

whether we place it on ourselves- or connect with others... compassion is- and solely is because of our/its relation to experience

You did not miss the point. i just didn't want to make it too personal. Your understanding is correct. Sometimes life takes on a very personal quality to me. i have to remind myself not to take myself too seriously. It is shame to get so identified with our own feelings. i mean feelings are o.k. but we are so much more. Occasionally i get glimpses of higher places though it does seem that the personal life is still a factor in my life. i think we are all just trying to understand this big drama called life that we are going thru. Sometimes the images of others seem so real and we recognize the uniqueness of their souls and ther influence in our lives.
