Good to hear you escaped the flooding ! Surprises me that such a beautifully scenic country as Australia has such extremes in the way of weather. One would never guess that from looking at pictures. Of course, in tourism and promoting a country they are only going to show the best images.

Thanks Into Blue and Steve. I'm down the bottom of the country so we escaped the floods. We tend to get the terrible bushfires down here...this is really a land of extremes...droughts and flooding rains. The all or nothing syndrome.
Yes the 5th is a blessed day. I'm at the tail end of holidays so the 5th was a pretty quiet one for me.
i wonder if it gets cold being somewhat closer to the Antarctic Circle and you are not real close to the sea?

The winters are cold...some days struggle to reach double digits (celcius) and the summers can be scorching. On the day of the huge bushfires 2 years ago the temperature went above 48 (celcius) with the hottest wind I've ever experienced. It was like being in a fan-forced oven and that's why the bushfires were so extreme that day. Nearly 200 people lost their lives.
We're pretty close to the ocean, Steve, but even in the hot summer the water's very cold because we're so close to the Antarctic. My children live up in Queensland (where all the flooding is) and I love the holidays up there becuase the beaches have that sub-tropical Pacific warmth...going for a swim is like taking a mildly warm bath.
What about you guys? What part of the States do you live? In the cooler climates or in the warmth?

The United States is large, much like Australia, it seems. i moved from Michigan just over a year ago to Southern California. The weather is much more milder here. It is 8 celcius tonite and that is in the middle of winter. During the day you can dip into the ocean. In Michigan it would have been much much colder with snow on the ground. Although Michigan had these gorgeous falls and springs when the leaves would change color. Everything gets so green in the spring and there are many lakes to swim in during the summer.
i hope you can come here someday. It is almost like you are from a different planet. Someday this will be the case as we meet others in the universe.

Steve HydonusPerhaps one day we'll make it there. I was actually born in England so I can understand the feelings of being on a different planet. Although I don't think our countries are so different. Australia is probably a little more left-leaning as there is a safety net for all and national health-care which are good things but they do come at a cost. I'm currently very worried about my kids in Brisbane, the floods are at epic proportions and my son and daughter are currently trapped in their upper story unit and the flood waters are rising. The whole town has been cut off. In Toowoomba yesterday (which is 700 metres above sea-level) they had an inland tsunami crash through the town at heights up to 7 metres, the news pictures showed people on their rooftops and the water was up to their knees. Most were rescued but a few lives were lost. It's just incredible what Mother Nature can do!
